Copa Del Rey: Los Blancos to Finish the Job in Madrid

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad

After another weekend of Primera Division action it’s back to the 2025 Copa del Rey when Real Madrid host Real Sociedad in a semi-final second leg.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid are in charge of the tie with a one goal lead from the first leg in San Sebastian thanks to Endrick who scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute, and Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil has his work cut out to turn this tie around. The Basque giants have had a flat season in La Liga though they ended a lengthening winless run with a 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid on Saturday. Meanwhile, Real Madrid were at home to Leganes on Saturday night and they suffered quite a fright before running out 3-2 winners.

The latest Copa del Rey 2025 betting odds make Los Blancos the favourites to win the cup at a SBOTOP price of 1.72, with the other tie between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the balance. First, they need to see off Sociedad which they should, but not without a fight from the underdogs.

Talking Points

Los Blancos battling on three fronts

At SBOTOP odds of 1.05 to advance to the Copa final Ancelotti’s team are under some pressure to see this tie through, but the manager has a number of priorities to work on as his team is still on course for an historic treble. Los Blancos are in a fierce race for the La Liga title as well as looking forward to a Champions League quarter final against Premier League chasers Arsenal, with the first leg on Tuesday 8th April.

The fixtures are mounting and the pressure is starting to pile up, and there were signs of stress at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday as Los Blancos had to come from behind to beat the minnows of Leganes 3-2. When young winger Ardo Guler won a penalty the ever reliable Kylian Mbappe fired home the opener on 32 minutes, but the visitors fought back with a quick-fire double as Diego Garcia and Dani Raba made it 1-2. England star Jude Bellingham pounced on a rebound to level the scores and Mbappe fired home the winner with just 15 minutes remaining. The hard earned victory took Real Madrid level with Barcelona on points with the Catalans due to play Girona on Sunday afternoon. The treble is definitely on, but Ancelotti needs the stars to align.

La Real remember how to win

Copa del Rey: Mikel Oyarzabal scored in Real Sociedad's last match
Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal in action against Nice

After a run of poor results Alguacil’s team finally picked up three points in a 2-1 win at home to Valladolid on Saturday thanks to goals from skipper Mikel Oyarzabal, and winger Sergio Gomez, who scored with a super free-kick. Even a late goal from the visitors couldn’t spoil the day as Sociedad moved up to ninth in the La Liga table, thanks to their early kick-off. It was by no means an easy day for the Basque boys as they shared the shot count at 12 each and, while their two shots on target landed in the net the visitors registered five on target. Oyarzabal will have a key part to play on Tuesday night in Madrid, as will advanced midfielder Brais Mendez who is top scoring with three goals in the competition.

While Sociedad have laboured in the Primera Division and recently crashed out of the Europa League, in a 4-1 defeat away to Manchester United, their Copa del Rey 2025 results have cast a ray of light over the campaign and the travelling fans will hope the journey is not yet over.

History

Los Blancos have won the Copa 20 times, the last occasion in 2023 while Sociedad are three times champions and four times runners up, the last triumph as recently is 2020.

The Madrid giants have bossed this relationship over the years, with 35 wins to 13 and there have been 12 draws in all competitions since 1993. Ancelotti’s men have beaten Sociedad twice already this season and both times in San Sebastian, 2-0 in the league and then 1-0 in the first leg of the Copa semi-final.

And with six wins from seven Los Blancos are in good shape, while Sociedad have just ended their six match winless streak.

Betting Tip

With Real Madrid at 1.27 to win I’ll look for my value somewhere else. The Draw at 4.93 and a Sociedad win at 7.14 are not out of the question but La Real will have to find another gear and probably enjoy a slice of luck to overturn this deficit. But they are not out of it yet and I expect the Basque side to work hard in the only competition they still have a chance of winning. I can see goals in this one…but not an avalanche.
