Copa America: Samba Boys are Ready to Dance Against the Peruvians

Brazil vs Peru

The Brazilians showed to everyone why they’re one of the favourites here in the Copa America after their comprehensive win over Venezuela last Monday and they’ll aim for more when they host Peru this weekend.

Tite’s side looked unstoppable in their first game and they plan on giving Peru a rude awakening in the first match of their campaign.

Brazil and Peru are already familiar with each other since they were the finalists in the 2019 edition of the tournament and for sure we can expect some bad blood in this tasty affair.

Peru are definitely looking for revenge after Brazil cost them their third title and what better way to make a statement than a triumph against their bitter rivals.

Recent form favours the hosts obviously, but can La Blanquirroja defy the odds once more and start another Cinderella run similar to two years ago?

Talking Points

Brazil are relentless

Tite is expected to maintain his starting XI against Peru since they played well in their opening game against Venezuela.

In the said match, Marquinhos started their scoring binge in the 23rd minute and when the depleted Venezuelans were fatigued in the second half, Neymar and Gabriel Barbosa tallied one each to secure the victory.

The Samba Boys are now undefeated in eight straight international fixtures and with the way they’re playing right now, that streak will not stop anytime soon.

Neymar is their most creative playmaker and he’ll always look to feed the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Gabriel Jesus, and Richarlison for goals.

Brazil’s defence is going to be hard to breach with Casemiro and Fred in the midfield, while Eder Militao, Renan Lodi, Marquinhos, and Danilo will shield the goal manned by Alisson.

But one of the players to watch out for if you’re Peru is Gabriel Barbosa. The 24-year-old forward has three goals in his eight caps and whether he starts or comes off the bench, he is always a dangerous option out front.

Peru have a renewed sense of confidence

Ricardo Gareca’s men are aiming to build a new winning streak as they try to make another deep run in this tournament.

Prior to this weekend, Peru broke their run of four straight losses against Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Colombia since they were able to secure a 2-1 victory over Ecuador in their last World Cup 2022 qualifiers fixture.

Christian Cueva and Luis Advincula scored the goals for La Blanquirroja and they’ll be tasked to lead the way as the club is undergoing somewhat of a transition period.

Sergio Pena, who has scored seven goals and two assists for Emmen this season in the Dutch Eredivisie, is one of their top young prospects and he should feature heavily in the starting lineup.

Gianluca Lapadula is another player who will look to make his presence felt for the Peruvians. The 31-year-old has only appeared four times for Peru and he’s the leading scorer for Benevento in Serie A this term with eight goals and two assists.

History

The reason why Brazil are the overwhelming favourites here is because they have been utterly dominant in their head-to-heads against Peru.

In their 16 matches together, Brazil have won 11 times while Peru have won only twice along with three draws.

As mentioned earlier, Brazil and Peru met in the 2019 Copa America finals where the former broke their 12-year title drought via a 3-1 tally.

Everton Soares had the first goal during the 15th minute, and it was followed up by goals from Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison in the second half. Jose Paolo Guerrero scored one for Peru in the losing effort.

Their last meeting was in the World Cup 2022 qualifiers where the Samba Boys won 4-2, as Neymar recorded a hat-trick while Richarlison added one also.
