Classy Ronnie Shows He’s Still Up There with the Best

countdown banner

Cristiano Ronaldo hit form in spectacular fashion, scoring a sublime hat-trick as Real Madrid blew away Real Sociedad in the best of this weekend’s La Liga football games.

Elsewhere, the biggest surprise came at the Camp Nou while football betting fans pondered how many Barca could beat Getafe by…but they drew a blank. And though betting odds remain stacked against Atletico lifting the title, they have narrowed the gap to Barca to seven points after beating Malaga.

Real Madrid 5-2 Real Sociedad

Los Blancos are finally finding some consistency as we come to the business end of the season, and the only surprise here was that the margin was just three goals. Toni Kroos and Lucas Vazquez added to Ronaldo’s three, but a late flurry from Sociedad gave the visitors some respectability.

Barcelona 0-0 Getafe

A brilliant defensive masterclass from Getafe earned them the honour of being the first side to keep a clean sheet against Barca this season. Neither side had a shot on target in the first half; and while the leaders stretched the Getafe defence in the second, they couldn’t break through, with Yerry Mina coming closest with a header.

Malaga 0-1 Atletico Madrid

If you want clinical efficiency, look no further than Diego Simeone’s Atletico. They are now within sight of league leaders Barcelona after victory against bottom club Malaga. Antoine Griezmann struck after just 40 seconds and that was that!

Valencia 3-1 Levante

Valencia stay third thanks to a convincing win against 17th-placed Levante. Santi Mina’s 17th-minute header gave the hosts the lead, but Sergio Postigo wiped that out 60 seconds later when he fired low into the corner. The Mestalla, however, went wild when Santi Mina turned provider to tee up Luciano Vietto’s 65th-minute strike before Daniel Parejo nailed the points with a late penalty.

Villarreal 1-2 Alaves

Back-to-back 1-2 defeats leave the Yellow Submarine in fifth, while a third win in five has lifted Alaves seven points clear of the drop zone.  A Rodrigo Ely header and a lovely strike from Ibai Gomez put the visitors two up, and while Carlos Bacca halved the deficit, there was no way back for Villarreal.

Sevilla 1-0 Girona

Sevilla are in sixth after a hard-fought win over a dangerous Girona side at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. Sensing their hosts’ nerves, the visitors had a late onslaught ending with a Portu header being saved in the top corner.

Leganes 0-1 Eibar

Eight points from four games have lifted Eibar to seventh, but they were a little fortunate to take all three points home from Madrid. Ivan Ramis netted the late winner after Leganes’ Dimitris Siovas had been dismissed. Leganes are comfortable in 12th.

Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Las Palmas

Struggling Las Palmas grabbed a welcome point in Bilbao in the Friday opener, but there was little in the way of entertainment for the 33,000 fans at the San Mames Stadium. Aritz Aduriz came close with a header, but that’s no win in five now for the hosts.

Celta Vigo 2-2 RCD Espanyol

In an entertaining clash in Vigo, Leo Baptistao gave Espanyol an early lead. The hosts fought back and Maxi Gomez thought his double had given Celta Vigo an expected win; but that was until Gerard Moreno earned a point for the visitors, arrowing his shot from distance into the bottom corner.

Deportivo La Coruna, deep in trouble in 19th and desperate for points, host mid-table Real Betis tomorrow
