These Cherries have Caused a Sports Betting Sensation!

Who was brave enough to ignore the betting odds and put money on some of these results?

For here were midweek football games which produced surprises, drama and more than stand-out results in south Wales and west London.

Swansea City 3-1 Arsenal

First Liverpool, now Arsenal.

The Carlos Carvalhal effect is working wonders at the Liberty Stadium.

What a morale-boosting victory this was to lift the Swans out of the relegation zone.

Sam Clucas’ double and a Jordan Ayew goal, after a Petr Cech blunder, mean Carvalhal has taken 10 points from his five games in charge.

West Ham United 1-1 Crystal Palace

Hammers’ captain Mark Noble kept his nerve from the penalty spot to earn a threadbare West Ham a point.

The goal came after Christian Benteke had returned to scoring form, nodding home only his second goal of the campaign midway through the half.

Arguably, both sides were not too disappointed to take a point each.

Huddersfield Town 0-3 Liverpool

A much-needed win for the Merseysiders and a clean sheet.

It included a 20th Premier League goal of the season for Egyptian Mohamed Salah, late January being the quickest time a Liverpool player has reached that milestone

Huddersfield are in freefall and now just a point clear of the drop zone.

Chelsea 0-3 Bournemouth

My word, who saw this coming?

One of the shock results of the season as Bournemouth stunned Chelsea.

Three goals in 16 second-half minutes cliched one of the Cherries’ best ever results and left the reigning champions floundering.

An unbeaten home run ended abruptly, courtesy of Callum Wilson, Junior Stanislas and Nathan Ake against the club which sold him last summer.

Everton 2-1 Leicester City

What a welcome for Theo Walcott!

His first game in Everton blue at Goodison saw him set up a Toffees’ equaliser, this second home match saw him emerge as the goalscoring hero.

Their first win of the calendar year was secured, despite a nervous finale after Jamie Vardy reduced the arrears, Kelechi Iheanacho twice hit the woodwork and Matty James saw a shot cleared off the line.

Newcastle United 1-1 Burnley

Newcastle fans must be wondering if their fortune will change.

Certainly, Burnley barely deserved the point they gained through a late own goal.

Yet, to a degree, Newcastle only had themselves to blame.

A first-half Joselu penalty, saved by Nick Pope, and a luckless Karl Darlow own goal mean the Toon still haven’t won at home in the league since October 21.

Southampton 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

All square in the south coast clash.

In truth, both sides could have done with a victory.

Glenn Murray fired Brighton ahead from the penalty spot with his ninth goal of the season.

After the break, Jack Stephens’ second goal in as many matches earned the hosts a point, although the Saints remain in the drop zone.

Manchester City 3-0 West Bromwich Albion

A routine home win for the leaders as they outclassed West Brom.

The Baggies were always unlikely to repeat their memorable FA Cup success at Anfield.

Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero got the goals as City moved 15 clear at the summit.

Stoke City 0-0 Watford FC

A lack of cutting edge from both sides goes some way to explaining why this encounter finished goalless.

Ultimately, this was a fair result and one which moved Stoke out of the bottom three.

Gerard Deulofeu was bright on his return to the Premier League, on loan from Barcelona.
