A Highly-Anticipated Encounter at the Bundesliga Summit

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Bayern Munich

Deutsche Bank Park will be the battleground for a meeting between the top two Bundesliga teams as Eintracht Frankfurt hosts Bayern Munich on Sunday.

With 13 and 12 points to their names, Bayern can either extend their lead or lose it should they concede the three points to Frankfurt.

After losing their curtain-raiser against Borussia Dortmund, Die Adler decided to be machines, winning five of their last six games in all competitions.

Dino Toppmoller’s crew had a chance to make it six out of six if only they had not surrendered a two-goal advantage against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

Bayern, meanwhile, remain happy campers under new boss Vincent Kompany.

The former Manchester City centre-back has seen his current work with Die Roten repaid with wins and dominant performances, leaving his critics with little ammunition against him.

But after five wins on the bounce, Die Roten have now gone two straight games without a win, drawing to Leverkusen and experiencing a surprise defeat to Aston Villa in the Champions League.

A match that will surely be filled with Bundesliga 2024 highlights, this early-season matchup between two contenders is one SBOTOP football fans must not miss.

Talking Points

Omar Marmoush is turning heads

A surprising name in one of Europe’s top five leagues, Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush is in dreamland the way he’s started the campaign so far.

The 25-year-old Egypt international has already netted six goals and three assists in just five games played. He’s also picked up a goal in the Europa League and two assists in the DFB-Pokal.

Formerly played for Wolfsburg, St. Pauli and Stuttgart, Marmoush is now making Frankfurt his home.

Looking at his performances as of late, he is setting in quite nicely.

His current Bundesliga goal tally is a record for Die Adler—he is the only player in the club’s history to have scored that many goals in the first five games of the season.

Not only is he a dangerous scoring threat, but he is also an adept creator of big chances, averaging nearly four shot-creating actions per 90 minutes.

He’s also won 54 per cent of his direct duels and is the most fouled player in the German top flight with 15 drawn.

And with the campaign still young, there is still so much more to expect from the soaring forward.

Villa defeat shouldn’t be concerning for Bayern

League leaders Bayern Munich remain unbeaten in the Bundesliga after five games.
Vincent Kompany sends instructions to his team during Bayern Munich’s match against Dinamo Zagreb in Champions League

It was a result out of nowhere for Aston Villa, beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League like they did back in the 1982 European Cup final.

A match in which Bayern dominated ended in defeat after Jhon Duran’s heroics in the 79th minute, when he lobbed Manuel Neuer out of the blue.

Despite suffering his first loss as the Bavarians’ manager, Vincent Kompany isn’t overreacting.

“It’s not like they have three of four dangerous shots on goal. I have three or four chances in mind that we didn’t take,” he said after the match.

And he was right. Bayern had 17 shots to Aston Villa’s five and controlled 70 per cent of the ball. They also had 11 corner kicks to the Villans’ one.

Still, the ball is round, and sometimes, losses like that happen.

“We had our chances, we didn’t score and now we’ve lost,” he added.

History

The recent meetings between Die Adler and Die Roten have been tight contests that make for great entertainment—three wins apiece and a draw in their last seven matches.

Overall, though, Bayern are the more dominant side in the head-to-head record (58W-23D-25L).

Both clubs have also split their season fixtures last year, with Bayern winning 2-1 at home and Frankfurt trashing the Bavarians at the Deutsche Bank Park, 5-1.

Betting Tip

Although Frankfurt are in stellar form as of writing and Bayern failing to win their last two games, the Bundesliga 2024 odds still have the Bavarians as the huge favourites to win at 1.47.

Frankfurt, meanwhile, are priced at 5.00.

If you’re tempted to put money on Frankfurt, feel free to do so, given the odds and how they’re performing as of the moment. But for a safer bet, I think this one will finish with 2-3 goals between the two sides.

Another exciting part for the fans will be in anticipation of who can produce a better performance between the top two in the scoring category. Can Harry Kane edge out Omar Marmoush? Or will the latter extend his lead as the league’s deadliest goalscorer? Well, you’re going to have to tune in to find out.
