Bundesliga: The Yellow Wall Will Light Up the Black Forest

SC Freiburg vs Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have a long way to go before catching up to Bayern Munich, so they must be nearly perfect in the next few games while hoping that the Bavarian giants will slip on a banana peel.

Since losing their last Der Klassiker in October, Niko Kovac’s men have gone unbeaten in the past six Bundesliga matches, and they hope to keep it going on Sunday when they visit SC Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion. They are currently third in the German top-flight standings with 28 points, nine points behind Bayern Munich and one point behind second-seeded RB Leipzig.

SC Freiburg also have a long way to go to make it to Europe next year. Julian Schuster’s side is ninth in the table with 16 points and entangled in a four-way tie with Koln, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Werder Bremen. Unlike BVB, the Black Forest have alternated wins and losses in their last four league matches.

Talking Points

Grifo on the verge of making SC Freiburg history

Freiburg have alternated wins and losses in the Bundesliga this campaign
SC Freiburg midfielder Vincenzo Grifo runs with the ball during a Europa League clash against OGC Nice

SC Freiburg started December on a high note with a 4-0 rout of 10-man Mainz, as Vincenzo Grifo was on the scoresheet. Grifo’s score in the first half was his 69th league goal, putting him level with Nils Petersen at the top of the club’s all-time scoring list. He didn’t find the back of the net in their 2-1 loss against Heidenheim last Saturday, but he’ll get another chance against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

As of this writing, the 32-year-old attacking midfielder leads the Black Forest in scoring with four league goals. Grifo typically plays on the left wing, with Lucas Holer, Johan Manzambi, and Jan-Niklas Beste alongside him in the final third.

Besides Grifo, Borussia Dortmund must be wary of Manzambi, who already has three league goals and one assist this season. The 20-year-old is becoming a hot commodity ahead of the winter transfer window because of his athleticism and versatility on the pitch, with Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen lurking.

While SC Freiburg are struggling to find consistency in the Bundesliga, the same can’t be said in Europe, as they’re one of the few undefeated teams left in the Europa League. Fresh from a 1-0 win over RB Salzburg last night, Julian Schuster’s men enter Sunday’s game in high spirits.

Brandt on target for Borussia Dortmund

Julian Brandt has regained his form in his last two appearances, which is great news for Borussia Dortmund. Since losing to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal Round of 16, the 29-year-old attacking midfielder has accounted for three of BVB’s four goals against Hoffenheim (2-0) and Bodo/Glimt (2-2), including a brace yesterday.

Last night marked Brandt’s 285th appearance for the Yellow Wall, and he’s within five strikes of the 100-goal mark at club level. But personal accolades will not be at the forefront of his mind when they prepare for SC Freiburg on Sunday, especially since he’s playing for a new contract extension next summer.

History

Borussia Dortmund have won their last seven games against SC Freiburg, and in all of them, the Yellow Wall have scored at least three goals. Nico Schlotterbeck left the Black Forest in 2022 to join BVB and has never lost against his former employers since (W6).

That includes last season, when the Yellow Wall completed a league double over the Black Forest with a whopping aggregate of 8-1. Their 4-1 win in April essentially secured their Top 4 finish last term. BVB’s last loss in this fixture was a 2-1 result in August 2021.

The Yellow Wall are unbeaten in their five Bundesliga matches immediately following Champions League ties this season, notching three wins and two draws.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2025 odds predict a relatively close match between the Yellow Wall and the Black Forest, despite their sizable gap in the standings. As expected, Borussia Dortmund have the edge at 2.14, whereas SC Freiburg are not far behind at 3.08, and a draw is at 3.22 in the 1X2 market.

But we’re inclined to believe that BVB will lay down a marker on SC Freiburg this weekend, and SBOTOP football fans will get their healthy dose of Bundesliga 2025 highlights. Bettors may also consider adding Over 2.25 at 1.63, Over 2.50 at 1.86, Over 2.75 at 2.08, and even Total Goals 4-6 at 3.18 to the parlay. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 4-1 in favour of the visitors – the result of their last league encounter – is on offer at a staggering 48.00 your bet.
