Bundesliga: Wolves on the Hunt for More Points

VfB Stuttgart vs VfL Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg are doing their best to keep pace with the European football race, but Lady Luck hasn’t been on their side in the past few weeks. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side are winless in their last four Bundesliga games, including three consecutive draws. If some of those draws were wins, Die Wolfe would’ve been higher in the German top-flight standings. They are ninth in the table with 30 points, level with 10th-seeded Werder Bremen.

VfB Stuttgart are in much better shape than VfL Wolfsburg. Sebastian Hoeneß’ men are fifth in the table with 35 points, and they’re fresh from a 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund last Saturday. However, like VfL Wolfsburg, they need three points from this match since SC Freiburg, Mainz, and Borussia Monchengladbach are lurking.

Learn more about these two sides in today’s SBOTOP preview and let us know who you think will win this Saturday at the MHPArena.

Talking Points

Chabot will play big for VfB Stuttgart

Jeff Chabot celebrated his 27th birthday yesterday, and another VfB Stuttgart victory will make him happy. The veteran centre-back has been one of Die Schwaben’s key players this season and is even one of the most underrated players in the German top-flight.

He scored his first league goal of the season last weekend to put VfB Stuttgart ahead by two goals against Borussia Dortmund. Julian Brandt scored a last consolation goal for BVB. Despite playing on the back foot, Die Schwaben left Signal Iduna Park with three points.

When he played for relegated Koln last season, Chabot won the highest percentage of duels of any player in the Bundesliga. VfB Stuttgart are happy he has maintained his form, as only Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah (71.5 per cent) is above him (65.6 per cent) in this year’s list.

VfB Stuttgart will need more heroics from Chabot, as the team’s injury list has worsened in the past few days. Jacob Bruun Larsen, Ameen Al-Dakhil, El Bilal Toure, Dan-Axel Zagadou, and Luca Raimund are in the medical room, and Die Schwaben are also sweating on the fitness of Deniz Undav – their second-leading scorer with seven league goals and one assist.

VfL Wolfsburg remain shorthanded

Ralph Hasenhüttl continues to deal with a huge lineup dilemma, as he might miss up to 10 senior players against VfB Stuttgart. Bartosz Białek (knee), Niklas Klinger (wrist), Kevin Paredes (foot), Lovro Majer (ankle), Rogerio (knee), and Kamil Grabara (thigh) remain in the medical room. Mads Roerslev and Lukas Nmecha are doubts. Team captain Maximilian Arnold suffered a knee injury against Bayer Leverkusen, and Joakim Mæhle must serve his suspension.

VfL Wolfsburg will need huge performances from Jonas Wind and Mohamed Amoura, who have eight league goals each this season. Hasenhüttl could also start Yannick Gerhardt and Sebastiaan Bornauw out of necessity. Andreas Skov Olsen, Kevin Behrens, and Aster Vranckx will likely come off the bench.

History

VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg have already squared off earlier this season. The two sides shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw last September at the Volkswagen Arena. Jonas Wind and Mohamed Amoura scored for Die Wolfe, and Enzo Millot and Deniz Undav scored for Die Schwaben. Atakan Karazor was sent off during the 63rd minute, reducing VfB Stuttgart to 10 men.

Die Schwaben are unbeaten in their three Bundesliga matches against Die Wolfe under Sebastian Hoeneß. VfB Stuttgart recorded a league double over VfL Wolfsburg last season for the first time since 2005-06. The team endured a three-game winless run against Die Wolfe before Hoeneß’ arrival (D1, L2).

VfL Wolfsburg are on a four-game winless run for the first time under Ralph Hasenhüttl (D3, L1). However, they are better off than they were at this stage last season with 30 points after the first 21 matchdays.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2025 odds expect VfB Stuttgart to prevail at home this weekend. Die Schwaben are at 1.75 odds to win, while a Die Wolfe victory is priced at 3.85, and another draw is at 3.75 in the 1X2 market. Simply put, the hosts have been the better team, so we wouldn’t be shocked if they take maximum points. Football fans and bettors can expect multiple Bundesliga 2025 highlights from this contest.
