Bundesliga: VfL Bochum are Not a Walk in the Park for Bayern Munich

VfL Bochum vs Bayern Munich

VfL Bochum and Bayern Munich had two of the craziest results from the 2021-22 season, so Bundesliga fans should mark this match on their calendars.

The Bavarian giants drew first blood in dominant fashion, but Die Unabsteigbaren replied with a blowout win of their own in the reverse fixture, and they’ll be ambitious for the same outcome this Sunday.

However, Die Unabsteigbaren’s confidence is low after consecutive defeats against Mainz and Hoffenheim, while Bayern Munich aren’t skipping a beat with convincing Bundesliga 2022 results versus Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg.

With another fun encounter ahead, read on below as SBOTOP offers certain talking points for this upcoming matchup.

Talking Points

VfL Bochum facing lineup concerns

Die Unabsteigbaren did well in their top-flight return last season when they finished 13th in the Bundesliga table – which is nine points clear of the relegation zone. But repeating or outdoing the same result this season might be too much to ask from them given their slow start.

Mainz took the early lead courtesy of Karim Onisiwo’s 26th minute goal, but Kevin Stoger answered back for VfL Bochum 13 minutes later. In the end, the 05ers secured the three points because Onisiwo scored again in the second half.

It was a similar situation for VfL Bochum when they took on Hoffenheim, but Simon Zoller’s brilliance in three minutes where he recorded a brace weren’t enough to topple their hosts.

VfL Bochum boss Thomas Reis can point to his depleted lineup as the main reason for their slow start, although you can’t fault them for trying.

His absentee list includes Jacek Goralski, Patrick Osterhage, Danilo Soares, and Kostas Stafylidis, while their talismanic wide-man Gerrit Holtmann was also sidelined due to a knee injury and remains a major doubt.

Zoller and Stoger are tasked to shoulder the heavy load once more, but the others have to do their part too in order to have a chance.

Jamal Musiala is becoming a star for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich to face Bochum in the third day of Bundesliga on Sunday
Julian Nagelsmann expects to make 2-3 changes to Bayern Munich’s starting XI vs Bochum

Jamal Musiala is slowly realising his potential as he’s been Bayern Munich’s most productive player so far. In their opening three games this term, the 19-year-old forward has tallied four goals and one assist.

While much of the spotlight is on their summer signing Sadio Mane, Musiala has been turning heads to establish himself as one of the world’s best young players today.

He always has his youthful energy and athleticism to rely on, but his more matured approach has taken his game to the next level – much to the delight of Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn.

With Serge Gnabry, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and Leon Goretzka dealing with injuries, Musiala will have more opportunities to shine and Bayern Munich might just have their new golden boy at their disposal.

But he recently picked up a knock, though, and hopefully it isn’t serious. If Musiala sits this one out, then expect Leroy Sane or the returning Kingsley Coman to take his place in the starting lineup.

History

Last season, Bayern Munich had the edge over VfL Bochum with an aggregate tally of 9-5 – where the Bavarians won 7-1 in the first, and Die Unabsteigbaren took a 4-2 victory in the next one.

The said 4-2 result was VfL Bochum’s first league win against Bayern Munich since 2004. They’ve never won back-to-back against the record Bundesliga champions, although they’ve beaten them twice at home in 1974 and 1975.

The last time that VfL Bochum were undefeated against Bayern Munich in two straight matches dates back to 1998.

For the first time in four years, the Bavarians have won both of their first two games in the season, which is good omen in their pursuit of their 11th straight Bundesliga crown.

In the last 11 campaigns that this happened, Bayern Munich only once failed to win the domestic silverware at the end of the season (4th place in 2006/07).

Same as last season, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are the only two sides with maximum points after two games.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2022 odds have Bayern Munich as the overwhelming favourites this Sunday. The Bavarians are pegged at1.17, while VfL Bochum are priced at 12.50 and a draw is at 7.40 in the 1X2 market.

Bayern Munich and VfL Bochum supporters may have shared a friendship over the last 50 years. But on the pitch, the visitors aren’t expected to take it easy against the hosts.

Over 3.50 @ 1.62 and Total Goal 4-6 @ 1.86 are possible alternatives to think about since recent encounters between these two have been goal fests.
