Bundesliga: Red Bulls Have Their Eyes on the Top 2

RB Leipzig vs SC Freiburg

RB Leipzig have a prime opportunity to inch closer to a Top 2 spot in the Bundesliga, following their postponed match against FC St. Pauli last week.  Due to the snowy weather, Ole Werner’s men have a game in hand heading into this weekend, and they’re up for a winnable match against SC Freiburg, where they can tack on more points in the German top-flight standings. If RB Leipzig take care of business against SC Freiburg at the Red Bull Arena, they’ll be only one point behind Borussia Dortmund before facing Bayern Munich next.

On the other hand, SC Freiburg are finding form lately, as they are unbeaten in their last three games, a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund and back-to-back victories against VfL Wolfsburg (4-3) and 10-man Hamburger SV (2-1). Julian Schuster’s side is eighth in the table with 23 points, and they can take the seventh seed this Wednesday.

Talking Points

RB Leipzig are fresh and ready to go

Rust could be an issue for RB Leipzig, as they’re the only Bundesliga team that has yet to play in almost a month. They were supposed to face FC St. Pauli last weekend, but the weather had other plans. However, the additional days off may have helped them on the injury front, as only three players are expected to be out on Wednesday against SC Freiburg. Johan Bakayoko and Viggo Gebel are dealing with lower-leg injuries, while Lukas Klostermann is feeling under the weather.

RB Leipzig received a timely boost in the final third, as Yan Diomande is back in the lineup. The 19-year-old winger represented Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations and is the Red Bulls’ joint-top scorer with six league goals and two assists this term. Before the Christmas break, Diomande won the league’s Rookie of the Month award for December, fending off competition from teammate Conrad Harder and Werder Bremen’s Mio Beckhaus.

Given his meteoric rise, Diomande has emerged as a hot commodity in the transfer market, which could tempt RB Leipzig to cash in on him. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t sell Diomande now, given his importance to the squad.

Grifo sets new SC Freiburg record

SC Freiburg are on a two-game winning streak because of Vincenzo Grifo, who has found the back of the net in their wins over VfL Wolfsburg and Hamburger SV. By doing so, the 32-year-old talisman set a new club record, leapfrogging Nils Petersen as the Black Forest’s all-time leading scorer in the Bundesliga, with 71 goals under his belt.

Philipp Treu, Derry Scherhant, and Igor Matanovic were also on the scoresheet in SC Freiburg’s scoring binge, where they scored six goals in their last two. Scherhant and Matanovic now have three league goals each, while Treu finally opened his account after making 13 league appearances.

Head coach Julian Schuster will almost have a full squad at his disposal, with only Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (knee) and Philipp Lienhart (muscular) unlikely to play against RB Leipzig.

History

RB Leipzig have been SC Freiburg’s bogey team over the past few years. The Black Forest have lost six of their last seven league meetings with the Red Bulls, with their last win being a 2-1 result in October 2019. After a 3-1 loss in their first encounter last term, SC Freiburg held RB Leipzig to a goalless draw last March 2025. It was against SC Freiburg that RB Leipzig won their first major trophy, winning via penalties during the 2021-22 DFB-Pokal final.

In terms of recent form, SC Freiburg have the slight advantage with three wins, one draw, and one loss in their last five, while RB Leipzig have two wins, one draw, and back-to-back losses in the same period.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2026 odds expect RB Leipzig to assert their dominance over SC Freiburg on Wednesday. The Red Bulls are 1.75 favourites, whereas the Black Forest are 3.93 underdogs, and a draw is at 3.63 in the 1X2 market.

Both teams are capable of producing new Bundesliga 2026 highlights, especially the hosts. SBOTOP bettors and fans can expect another high-scoring contest between these two sides, making alternatives like Over 2.75 at 1.78, Over 3.00 at 2.03, Over 3.25 at 2.29, and even Total Goal 4-6 at 2.71 worth considering. However, if you fancy a low-scoring affair, then check out the Correct Score of 0-0 – the result of their last league encounter – as it offers a handsome payday of 16.00 your bet.
