Bundesliga: Lewandowski Delivers Bombshell on Last Day

countdown banner

The final matchday of the 2021-22 Bundesliga season delivered its fair share of bombshells, the biggest of which came from Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern Munich star confirmed that he wants to leave the club amid speculation about his future.

Elsewhere, Erling Haaland is already on his way out of the Bundesliga, and the Manchester City-bound star had a fitting end to his Dortmund stint as he scored to help BVB get the win on his last game for the club.

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig secured their spot in the Champions League with their draw against relegated Arminia Bielefeld as Freiburg fell to sixth after a late defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

And on the other end of the table, Stuttgart successfully avoided the relegation play-off as they leapfrogged Hertha Berlin, who will now play in the play-off after losing to Dortmund.

Read on below as SBOTOP rounds up the Bundesliga 2022 news and updates from the last round of matches.

Lewandowski confirms he won’t sign new Bayern contract

Robert Lewandowski has confirmed that he does not want to sign a new contract at Bayern Munich.

Lewandowski, whose contract expires at the end of next season, had recently told club director Hasan Salihamidzic that he wants to leave the club.

“I told the club that if an offer comes in, then we have to think about it – also for the club. We have to find the best solution for both sides,” Lewandowski said.

He added: “I won’t sign a new contract.”

Lewandowski scored in Bayern’s final match of the Bundesliga season, a 2-2 draw away to Wolfsburg. That gave hm a total of 35 goals on the season to win his fifth Bundesliga top scorer award in a row.

After eight highly successful years at Bayern where he has scored 344 goals in 375 appearances, the 33-year-old Lewandowski has been linked with a move away from Bavaria, with Barcelona emerging as a potential landing spot.

But when he was asked whether Barcelona have approached Bayern with an offer for Lewandowski, Salihamidzic responded:

“No. ‘Lewa’ has a contract here until the summer of next year, that’s a fact. Our stance has always been clear.”

Haaland scores in Dortmund farewell

Erling Haaland scored in his final game at Borussia Dortmund as he helped them beat Hertha Berlin 2-1.

The Manchester City-bound striker scored BVB’s equalising goal from the penalty spot before 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko got the winning goal six minutes from time.

Haaland finishes with 62 goals in 67 Bundesliga games and 89 goals in 86 appearances overall since joining Dortmund at the start of 2020.

Haaland took to social media after the match to pen his farewell message to Dortmund and the club’s fans.

“It has been nothing but a pleasure and an honour to wear this shirt. At @bvb09, I’ve spent memorable moments, met special people and extraordinaire team-mates, not to mention a fanbase that has been always our extra man on the pitch. The Yellow Wall is truly incredible and something that you need to witness at least once in your life. I’ll never forget any of this! Thank you all!,” Haaland said.

Leipzig finish fourth as Freiburg fall to sixth

RB Leipzig have secured the fourth and final Champions League place as they salvaged a late 1-1 with relegated Arminia Bielefeld. Willi Orban scored the equalising goal in stoppage time to give the Red Bulls a point.

Domenico Tedesco’s side only needed a point to seal fourth spot over Freiburg, who started the day two points behind and needed to beat third-placed Bayer Leverkusen in their last game.

But Freiburg failed to get the win they needed to stand any chance of overtaking Leipzig as they lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen. Freiburg had equalised through Janik Haberer two minutes from time, but Leverkusen grabbed a 97th-minute winner through Exequiel Palacios.

Freiburg’s loss, coupled with Union Berlin beating Bochum 3-2, means Freiburg fell to sixth in the table.

Stuttgart successfully avoid relegation

Stuttgart defied the Bundesliga 2022 odds as they successfully escaped relegation thanks to a late 2-1 win over FC Koln. Wataru Endo’s stoppage-time goal saw them draw level with Hertha Berlin on 33 points, but they finished above the capital club thanks to a better goal difference.

Because of Hertha’s loss to Borussia Dortmund, they will now play in the relegation play-off, where they will face Hamburg.
