Bundesliga: It’s ‘As You Were’ For The Top Two

countdown banner

It was a pretty super Sunday for the Bundesliga’s best two teams as both FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund won their games in spectacular style to cement their places at the top of the league table.

Top faced bottom at the Allianz Arena in Munich and the points went the way we all expected as FC Bayern came from behind to register a 4-1 win over Greuther Fuerth, while BVB, inspired by skipper Marco Reus, hammered Borussia Monchengladbach 6-0 to stay six points behind the leaders and eight ahead of third placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Basement club Greuther clung on for the first half of their game with Bayern; in fact they did more than that, going into half time with a lead thanks to captain Branimir Hrgota who fired a free-kick into the top corner beyond the reach of Sven Ulrich. But Bayern went at the underdogs from the very first minute of the second half as Robert Lewandowski converted a cross from Jean-Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to level and open the floodgates. Hapless Greuther defender Sebastien Griesbeck put through his own net on the hour and late goals from Lewandowski, his second and 28th of the campaign, and Choupo-Moting made the score line look more comfortable than the game had been for Bayern.

The Bundesliga 2022 betting odds back a Bavarian title and the reigning champions can only be caught by one team…

Dortmund suffered a Europa League humbling at the hands of Glasgow Rangers last week and they now face a trip to Scotland with a two goal deficit to make up. Die Schwarzgelben have been without Erling Braut-Haaland for the last three games and the big Norwegian was absent again when a home game against Borussia Monchengladbach gave Marco Rose’s side a chance to make amends and keep pace with FC Bayern at the top of the table.

And that they did, in some style as skipper Reus had five goal involvements. BVB took the game to Borussia Monchengladbach and went into half time with a two goal lead. Man of the match Reus opened the scoring with a smart finish, low in the corner and Donyell Malen latched onto the skipper’s through ball to double the lead.

Here at SBOTOP we previewed this game and predicted more than 3.25 goals and Die Fohlen did their best to oblige, Alassane Plea forcing a fine save from Gregor Kobel and Jonas Hofmann crashing a shot against the bar. But BVB took the responsibility and blew the visitors away with a second half blitz.

Marius Wolf had been on the pitch for two minutes when he crashed a shot from a tight angle in off the underside of the bar, Youssoufa Moukoko made it four, both assisted by Reus, before the 5-star hero beat Yann Sommer in a one on one. There was still time for Emre Can to get on the score sheet with a 91st minute penalty.

Reus put in a captain’s performance with two goals and three assists; and all BVB need to do now is to ensure their Bundesliga 2022 results are damn near perfect and then hope Bayern have two or more slips!

Hoffenheim and Koln have serious European ambitions

Bundesliga: Anthony Modeste scored in the 84th minute of Koln's 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt
Koln’s Anthony Modeste celebrates after scoring against Eintracht Frankfurt

Away from the Bundesliga’s top two, there are two surprise packages making a play for European places. TSG Hoffenheim finished 11th last season while Koln only survived in the top flight thanks to a play-off win over second tier club Kiel. But this season Seb Hoeness’s Hoffenheim are pushing for a Champions League place for the first time since 2018  while Koln are moving in on the top six.

TSG had to come from behind against improving Wolfsburg who followed up two consecutive wins by going ahead in the first half when Jonas Wind hit a beauty into the top corner, following a quick passing interchange between new signing Max Kruse and Max Philipp. Kruse looks to be a fantastic addition for Wolfsburg but it was Hoffenheim who stepped it up in the second half to turn the result on its head, Jacob Bruun Larsen equalising with a sensational overhead kick and then Andrej Kramaric grabbed all three points with a close range finish. The win took TSG up to fourth in the table with seventh placed Red Bull Leipzig still to play but, just two points behind them in sixth place, FC Koln won as Antony Modeste climbed off the bench to earn an impressive victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. He picked up the ball from a throw in, mid way inside the Eintracht half and coolly slid it home with his first shot of the game, and his last. With just six minutes left on the clock Frankfurt had no answer and Koln’s unlikely European challenge gathers pace.
