Bundesliga: Heidenheim are Not Afraid by the Black Forest

FC Heidenheim vs SC Freiburg

Heidenheim raised a lot of eyebrows in the beginning of the 2024-25 Bundesliga campaign, as they are in the Top 4 after the first three matchdays. After notching consecutive wins against St. Pauli and Augsburg, their perfect run was halted by Borussia Dortmund last weekend.

Frank Schmidt and co. are eager to return on the winning track when they’ll host SC Freiburg at the Voith-Arena on Saturday.

Like Heidenheim, SC Freiburg also have six points to occupy the seventh spot in the table. After defeating VfB Stuttgart in the opener, they were beaten by Bayern Munich but bounced back against VfL Bochum last time out.

This is a huge game for both sides because a win could put them into the Top 4, and SBOTOP has you covered with today’s match preview.

Talking Points

Heidenheim scoring goals for fun

Heidenheim have found success in the opening stages of the 2024-25 campaign because of their free-scoring ways. As things stand, they are the third-highest scoring team in the Bundesliga with eight goals.

They defeated St. Pauli with a score of 2-0, which was followed by a 4-0 rout of Augsburg. Heidenheim scored two more goals against Borussia Dortmund, but they conceded four goals.

But if you count the other competitions they’ve already played in, such as the DFB-Pokal and the Europa Conference League, Heidenheim have already notched 17 goals.

Maximillian Breunig leads the team in scoring with five goals, while Paul Wanner is right behind him with four. Leo Scienza and Marvin Pleringer have two each, while Sirlord Conteh, Mathias Honsak, Jan Schoppner, and Adrian Beck have one apiece.

Breunig didn’t get to see much action when he was with SC Freiburg last season, so it’s good to see him doing well at Heidenheim. He just turned 24 last month, and he should continue to get better from here.

Paul Wanner, meanwhile, is making an early case for winning this season’s Rookie of the Season award. Most believe that the Bayern Munich loanee is a mix of Thomas Muller, Florian Wirtz, and Jamal Musiala.

Will Heidenheim continue to punch above their weight? Only time will tell. But right now, Frank Schmidt has his boys playing freely and without any pressure.

SC Freiburg may have found the next Austrian gem

Michael Gregoritsch is not expected to be available for SC Freiburg for the third straight time this weekend because he is recovering from a hamstring injury. However, the Black Forest haven’t skipped a beat because of his compatriot, Junior Adamu.

Adamu, who rarely played for SC Freiburg last season, came out hot out of the gates this year. The 23-year-old forward, who was signed for a reported €6 million last summer, now has four goals in all competitions to lead the team in scoring.

With Junior Adamu, Vincenzo Grifo, Ritsu Doan, Lucas Holer, and Maximillian Eggestein in tow, head coach Julian Schuster has a good bunch to work with.

Like Heidenheim, SC Freiburg have also poured in goals already this season, notching nine goals in three Bundesliga appearances and one DFB-Pokal game.

History

Heidenheim and SC Freiburg are meeting for just the fifth time ever this weekend. The Black Forest won their first two matches against Heidenheim in the second division in 2015-16.

However, Heidenheim were unbeaten in their maiden Bundesliga games against SC Freiburg last term with one win and one draw, including a 3-2 victory at the Voith-Arena on December 2023.

Frank Schmidt’s men have won each of their last two Bundesliga home games and are looking to make it three in a row for the first time.

SC Freiburg, meanwhile, are without a win in three Bundesliga road matches (D1, L2). If they lose again on Saturday, it’ll mark the first time since 2017-18 that they lose their opening two away matches in the German top-flight.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2024 odds expect a tight affair between Heidenheim and SC Freiburg. The visitors were given the slight edge at 2.37, whereas the hosts aren’t far behind at 2.64, and a draw is at 3.32 in the 1X2 market.

Because this game could go either way, we will take a look at the possible goal count of this match instead, and we feel that these two sides are going to make an appearance in the Bundesliga 2024 highlights reel.

Other than our recommended bet above, you may also go for Over 2.50 at 1.73 or Over 2.75 at 1.98. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 1-1 – the result of their most recent meeting – has a decent offer of 6.40.
