Bundesliga: Are Gladbach Still Bayern’s Bogey Team?

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich will re-open their 2024-25 Bundesliga push with a game against Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park on Saturday night. Besides getting the full three points, Die Bayern are determined to win this match because of their history with the Foals.

Borussia Monchengladbach have historically been Bayern Munich’s no. 1 bogey team in the past few years, but it feels like Vincent Kompany’s men are already past that. Bayern Munich are coming off a 5-1 win against RB Leipzig and are on top of the German top-flight standings with 36 points, leading by four above second-seeded Bayer Leverkusen.

The Foals’ fans dream about returning to European football next season because their team has improved in the past few weeks. Borussia Monchengladbach are the eighth seed with 24 points, level with ninth-seeded SC Freiburg.

Talking Points

Gladbach suddenly on the up

Borussia Monchengladbach have risen to eighth place before the end of 2024 after overcoming an uneven start. After losing 3-1 against SC Freiburg in late November, the Foals secured a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund and back-to-back wins over Holstein Kiel (4-1) and Hoffenheim (2-1).

Tim Kleindienst had been carrying the squad early in the season, and he finally got some help, as Alassane Plea is rounding into form. The veteran striker accounted for three of the team’s seven league goals during their unbeaten run to improve his totals to six goals and one assist.

Kleindienst has been linked to a possible move away from Borussia Monchengladbach in the ongoing winter transfer window. Wolves and Everton are reportedly interested in the 29-year-old striker, but the Foals plan to keep him around.

The Foals are taking a proactive approach in the winter transfer window since they believe they have something viable to build on in the long run. According to local reports, Borussia Monchengladbach are close to acquiring Kevin Diks from FC Copenhagen to bolster their defencive depth.

Musiala is a doubt for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala is likely to miss their upcoming Bundesliga match as he is recovering from an illness
Bayern Munich players Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala celebrate a goal during their Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich are on top of the German top-flight table because they boast the league’s best attack. Vincent Kompany’s men have generated 47 goals while conceding only 13 from the other end.

Harry Kane is the frontrunner for this year’s Bundesliga Golden Boot, with 14 league goals and five assists. The Englishman has formed a robust partnership with Jamal Musiala. However, Musiala might not be around to assist Kane this weekend.

Jamal Musiala has been ill since the Christmas break. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder didn’t play in the team’s 6-0 blowout win over RB Salzburg during a club friendly, and he has yet to train with the team this week. Not having Musiala is a big blow since he is Bayern Munich’s second-top scorer, with nine league goals and two assists. Should Musiala miss the Borussia Monchengladbach match, Thomas Muller could take his no. 10 spot in the starting XI, just as he did against RB Salzburg.

History

Borussia Monchengladbach have won five of their last nine Bundesliga home games against Bayern Munich (D1, L3). Since the start of the 2015-16 campaign, no other team has enjoyed as many home wins against Bayern Munich in the German top-flight as Borussia Monchengladbach. With seven wins after the opening 15 matchdays, the Foals have already tied their win total last season. Amassing 24 points in the first 15 matchdays is their best tally since 2020-21.

Bayern Munich have won the first game of the new calendar year seven times in the last nine years (D1), with their only loss being a 2-1 result against Borussia Monchengladbach in January 2022. Florian Neuhaus and Stefan Lainer scored for the Foals, while Robert Lewandowski scored for Die Bayern.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2025 odds expect Bayern Munich to get the full three points at the expense of Borussia Monchengladbach. Die Bayern are 1.38 favourites to win, whereas the Foals are 5.80 underdogs, and a draw is at 4.80 in the 1X2 market.

Both teams are expected to put up Bundesliga 2025 highlights, with the visitors likely to score more goals. So, other than our recommended bet above, bettors can also go for alternatives like Over 3.25 at 1.73, Over 3.50 at 1.91, Over 3.75 at 2.14, and Total Goals 4-6 at 2.21, with Total Goals 2-3 at 2.39 being the more conservative choice. Furthermore, the Correct Score of 3-1 in favour of Die Bayern – the result of their most recent league meeting – is priced at 9.60.
