Bundesliga: FC Bayern’s Fab Five

We’re half way through the 2021/22 campaign and FC Bayern are already nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table. Defeats for Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Red Bull, just before the winter break, opened the door for the Bavarians to stroll through with a 4-0 destruction of Wolfsburg.

So a record 32nd Bundesliga title, and a tenth on the trot, looks well on the cards as Julian Nagelsmann’s men go on a relentless march to glory. The Bayern side is packed to the brim with world class talent and that makes them a good bet for Champions League success as well. So with another week to go before the league starts up again let’s take a look at five of the superstars who have made Die Bayern such a formidable opponent.

1: Robert Lewandowski

One man who was always nailed on to dominate the Bundesliga 2021 highlights is, of course, Robert Lewandowski. The lethal Pole is a scoring phenomenon; he’s bagged an incredible 222 goals in 236 appearances for Bayern, and 74 in 128 games for Poland. This year he has broken the record for the most league goals in a calendar year, with a strike against Wolfsburg, three minutes from the end of the game.

In typically ruthless fashion he volleyed home his 43rd goal of 2021 to beat the legendary Gerd Muller’s 42 goal tally from way back in 1972. He was many people’s choice for the 2021 Ballon D’Or and it seems rather odd that he didn’t scoop that award with such an achievement. He finished in second place, just 33 points behind the winner Lionel Messi.

2: Thomas Muller

Lewandowski would be the first to give credit to his partner Thomas Muller, the Bayern mainstay who has been at the club for 13 seasons. The 32 year old target man has scored 134 goals in 400 games for the club, while winning over 100 caps for Germany. But it is his assists record which stands out as he regularly tops that list in the Bundesliga.

He’s at it again with 13 assists to his name in the 2021/22 campaign, adding one in Bayern’s thrashing of Wolfsburg. He also scored in his 400th appearance for the club he has served with such distinction.

There is one more record for the club to collect. Bayern have scored in 64 consecutive Bundesliga games, one short of a league record; and when they play Borussia Monchengladbach in just over a weeks time they are heavily odds on to make it 65; and you won’t get long odds on a Muller assist and a Lewandowski goal!

3: Manuel Neuer

Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann and Manuel Neuer celebrate after the match vs Borussia Dortmund

At the other end of the pitch another Bayern legend is having a great season as Manuel Neuer continues to patrol the penalty area and organise his defence with supreme authority. The Bundesliga 2021 betting odds have long since stopped doubting a tenth successive title for Die Bayern and one of the main reasons is the rock of dependability between the sticks.

The 35 year old captain has been at the club since his transfer from Schalke in 2011 and, so far in this campaign, he has conceded 16 goals, the joint lowest in the league, level with third placed SC Freiburg.

4: Lucas Hernandez

When he arrived at Bayern Munich in 2019 for a club record fee of 80m Euros, France defender Lucas Hernandez already had a big reputation, having starred for Atletico Madrid in La Liga and as an ever present in France’s 2018 World Cup winning team. He has already won the Bundesliga and the Champions League with Die Bayern and has developed into a complete defender. Atletico boss Diego Simeone said that his departure hurt the club more than the departure of Antoinne Griezmann, and we can see why; Hernandez’ 93 per cent pass completion is bettered only by Borussia Monchengladbach’s Nico Elvedi.

5: Alphonso Davies

21 year old Alphonso Davies has the best players around him to learn from with the likes of Neuer and Hernandez alongside; and he’s making a name for himself as a cultured defender with an electric turn of pace down the wing. The Canadian wingback has made the most sprints in the league, 515 in 16 appearances, and when he sets off on a run, the fans leap to their feet.

The Bundesliga returns from the winter break when Die Bayern face Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday 7th January; here at SBOTOP we’ll be ready with the odds, stats and updates. The Bavarians are at 1.21 to beat Die Fohlen; and with a winning goal the hosts are set to equal yet another record!
