Bundesliga: Bayern Aren’t Scared of the Big Bad Wolves

Bayern Munich vs VfL Wolfsburg

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich are back in action after the Christmas break when Wolfsburg are the visitors to the Allianz Arena in a mouthwatering Sunday clash.

Vincent Kompany’s side signed off for the break with a 4-0 win away to FC Heidenheim, while Wolfsburg lost a seven-goal thriller at home to SC Freiburg. Bayern have a handy nine-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table, but the Wolves are anything but comfortable, down in 14th and just three points above the drop zone.

Round 16 starts on Friday when Borussia Dortmund can trim the gap at the top to six points with a win away to Eintracht Frankfurt, which is easier said than done. In any case, the Bundesliga 2026 betting odds have long since settled on Bayern Munich winning the title. But it is one step at a time, and Kompany will not take Daniel Bauer’s hungry Wolves lightly.

Talking Points

Fifty up for Kompany

Bayern Munich star Harry Kane leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with 19 goals

Sunday may well be a double celebration for the Bayern boss. If his team beats Wolfsburg, he’ll toast the victory on his 50th match in the Bundesliga. The former Burnley manager has only lost two of his first 49, so a defeat is almost unthinkable, particularly when you look at the way his team has blasted through the opposition so far this season.

League-leading scorer Harry Kane has been in incredible form, with 19 goals from the first 15 games, and he clearly has his sights set on the league record of 41. Summer recruit Luis Diaz has started well, too, scoring eight goals and making six assists, while the club’s 2024 arrival, Michael Olise, is the league’s top assist maker with eight.

As well as being unbeaten in the Bundesliga, with the best attacking and defencive statistics, Bayern are going well in the Champions League, and Kompany has had a smooth ride in terns of injury, though he will be without midfield ace Joshua Kimmich for the visit of Wolfsburg.

The 30-year-old missed the win over Heidenheim and was not in training at the start of this week. So, with a midweek game against Cologne and a trip to RB Leipzig to follow, the manager will treat his star with care and reintroduce him only when he is 100-per cent fit.

Attack may be Wolfsburg’s best defence

Wolfsburg were three unbeaten before the loss to SC Freiburg, scoring a total of 10 goals over the past four games. In fact, the Wolves have scored in each of their last eight matches and have bagged three in each of the last three games. Bauer’s men beat FC Union Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach, both 3-1. On the back of a 1-1 draw away to Eintracht Frankfurt, those points were enough to haul Wolfsburg out of the bottom three.

And they had Freiburg on the ropes at 3-2 last time out before an unfortunate own goal let the visitors back into the game. 20-year-old German striker Dzenan Pejcinovic scored a spectacular hat-trick against Freiburg, and alongside Patrick Wimmer, he can stretch a tired defence. With skipper Maximilian Arnold and Danish legend Christian Eriksen in the midfield, this is a team with plenty of creativity.

If Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga 2026 results match their efforts from December, then they will be just fine, but Sunday will present their biggest test so far.

History

Much like their relationship with most clubs, the Bavarians have bossed Wolfsburg over the years, winning 41 of the last 51 meetings, losing four, and drawing six. At the Allianz Arena, they have been even more brutal, winning 26 and drawing one from 27, and they have won the last six home and away since they played out a 2-2 draw in Wolfsburg in 2022.

So do the Wolves have a prayer on Sunday? Well, last season, both matches where five-goal affairs edged by Bayern, so the underdogs fought hard.

They did pick up form just before the Christmas break, with two wins, one draw, and three losses from the last six.

Bayern have won five and drawn one, a 2-2 scrap at home to Mainz, where a late Harry Kane penalty snatched a point for Kompany’s men, and maintained their unbeaten league run.

Betting Tip

This match should be as one-sided as they come with Bayern at SBOTOP odds of 1.18 to win, Wolfsburg way out at 17.00, with the draw priced at 9.25.

I’m going out on a limb here, because the one-sided nature of the odds makes a shock all the more lucrative, and for no other reason. Of course, I think Bayern will win, but anyone can suffer a post-Christmas hangover.
