Bundesliga: Wolfsburg Ready to Pounce on Fading Foals

countdown banner

Borussia Monchengladbach vs VfL Wolfsburg

Borussia Monchengladbach’s once-promising Bundesliga season is in danger of ending on a sour note. The Foals’ form since the season’s resumption has not been great, and as a result, they could now fall out of the top four.

Gladbach need to get a win at home against Wolfsburg to keep their dreams of Champions League football alive.

However, that will be much easier said than done as the Wolves have proven to be very dangerous away from home all season.

Talking Points

Things not going well for Gladbach

Borussia Monchengladbach have had a brilliant first season under coach Marco Rose. The Foals have played some entertaining attacking football that has seen them in the top four for much of the year.

However, their Bundesliga 2020 results since the season restarted have not been great. They’ve won just two of their six matches, with three defeats and a draw.

That draw came against relegation-threatened Werder Bremen.

The Foals have now lost back-to-back games for the first time all season after dropping consecutive away matches at Freiburg and at Bayern Munich.

Bundesliga: Alassane Plea returns in Borussia Monchengladbach squad after serving one match suspension

There’s usually no shame in losing to the champions at Munich, but Gladbach had a great opportunity to pick up at least a point against a Bayern side that was without both Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller.

Although, the Foals were not helped by the fact that they lost star forward Marcus Thuram to injury after just 10 minutes. He was replaced by Breel Embolo, who is also dealing with an injury of his own.

The 22-year-old Thuram has had a fantastic first season for Gladbach with 10 goals and eight assists, including four goals in his last five games. But with so little time in between games, it looks unlikely that he will be ready to return for the match against Wolfsburg.

Luckily, Alassane Plea will be back after serving a one-match suspension against Bayern. Plea has been equally impressive this season with 10 goals and a team-high 10 assists.

Gladbach have the best home record in the league outside of Bayern and Dortmund this season, but their form has slipped significantly. They’ve won just two of their last five matches at Borussia Park, with defeats to Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

Wolfsburg’s amazing away form

Wolfsburg’s woeful home form continued as they suffered a 2-2 draw against Freiburg over the weekend. They looked on course for the win after Wout Weghorst scored twice inside half an hour, but they conceded twice either side of half-time to drop more points at the Volkswagen Arena.

Wolfsburg have failed to win all three of their home matches since returning to action as they also lost to both Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Wolves have won just four of 16 home games this season — and just once in their last eight — with seven draws and five defeats.

But despite their horrific home record, they are still in sixth and are on course for a Europa League qualification place thanks to their amazing away form.

They’ve won eight of their 15 away matches to date and are unbeaten in their last six (five wins). Granted, four of their six opponents were inside the bottom six of the table, but they did beat Champions League hopefuls Bayer Leverkusen 4-1, which went against the Bundesliga 2020 betting odds.

After an extended goal drought, Wolfsburg top scorer Wout Weghorst has rediscovered his scoring touch. The Dutch marksman has scored three goals in the last two games, raising his tally to 14 goals this season.

History

Wolfsburg had had the significant upper hand in their matchups with Borussia Monchengladbach for the past few years. The Wolves have won 15 of their last 31 meetings, with the Foals claiming just six wins.

Wolfsburg have won five of the last eight games against Gladbach, with two draws and just one defeat.

It’s also interesting to note that the away side has not won all but four of their last 26 meetings. Wolfsburg have recorded all four of those away wins.

Betting Tip

??
Borussia Monchengladbach vs VfL Wolfsburg VfL Wolfsburg Asian Handicap +0.50 @ 1.85
June 17, 00:30 (GMT+8)

Even though they haven’ been in the best of form, SBOBET odds still have Gladbach as 2.08 favourites to win at home, with Wolfsburg priced as 3.50 underdogs. A draw is 3.30.

But based on their away form, as well as recent history, Wolfsburg appears to be the play here, particularly on the Asian Handicap market.

Even if the Wolves don’t add to their impressive winning run away from home, they still stand a decent chance of holding a Gladbach side that will likely be without a key forward to a draw at Borussia Park.
