Bundesliga: Robert Lewandowski is the Undisputed Goalscoring King

countdown banner

Robert Lewandowski was recently named as the top goalscorer in all of Europe as he was given the Golden Boot trophy.

But the Big Pole clearly has his eyes sight set on bigger trophies such as helping Bayern Munich win their 10th consecutive Bundesliga championship as well as the Ballon d’Or.

It’s been a fruitful week for him and his club, and the Bundesliga 2021 odds continue to affirm their title credentials as they remain on top of the table after the first five matchdays.

Sitting below them are VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen who have solidified their places after some positive Bundesliga 2021 results in the last time out. On the other hand, Mainz and SC Freiburg have been surprisingly punching above their weight.

Two of the usual top four contenders in Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig, meanwhile, have been playing below their expectations and they must improve their form sooner or later.

Without further ado, allow SBOTOP to discuss some of the notable developments that have occurred these past few days.

Robert Lewandowski is still making a run at the Ballon d’Or

It’s hard to blame football fans whenever they think that Robert Lewandowski was robbed of the Ballon d’Or award last year after seeing him win the Europe Golden Boot yesterday.

It can be noted that the FIFA committee inexplicably cancelled the prestigious award for 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the football calendar.

Such news was a huge blow for Lewandowski considering his tremendous form for the Bavarians last term — where he scored 50 goals in all competitions — along with the trophy haul to show for it.

Fast forward to today, the Pole carried on by continuing to score goals left and right and Bayern Munich are off to a fast start thanks to him – with four straight wins on the bounce.

For September alone, the defending Bundesliga champions demoralised RB Leipzig, Barcelona, and Bochum. In the process, they have tallied 14 goals in just three games while only conceding once – which is insane.

During their convincing win over newly-promoted Bochum four days ago, Lewandowski set a new record as he scored in 13 consecutive Bundesliga home games and has now netted in 19 straight Bayern games total.

Top teams are scoring goals for fun

Speaking of goals, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have also caught everyone’s attention lately because of their goalscoring sprees.

BVB and Die Werkself are just behind the Bavarians (20) in goals scored at 17 and 15 respectively, and that has helped them enter into the top four of the standings.

When these two faced off two matchdays ago, Bundesliga fans in the BayArena were given a huge treat as Dortmund and Leverkusen combined for seven goals in a thrilling affair – which featured six various goalscorers.

Erling Haaland scored twice including the winner and he was accompanied by Julian Brandt and Raphael Guerreiro for BVB while Die Werkself were backstopped by Florian Wirtz, Patrik Schick and Moussa Diaby.

Both clubs have been solid and the only thing you can nitpick about them is that they have been too reliant on their offence since they haven’t secured clean sheets in a while.

Gladbach and Leipzig lacking teeth up front

In stark contrast, Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig have yet to find their bearings this season under their new managers.

Adi Hutter left Eintracht Frankfurt for Borussia Monchengladbach while Jesse Marsch left Salzburg for a bigger challenge in Leipzig, but things aren’t going according to plan for these two.

Gladbach are one of the lowest scoring teams in the league with five goals despite a talented group. Lars Stindl is their top scorer with two while Denis Zakaria, Jonas Hofmann, and Alassane Plea have only one each.

The losses of Marcus Thuram and Stefan Lainer have severely hurt them on both ends, and the Foals must find a way to cope since they’re out for an extended time due to a torn MCL and a fractured ankle respectively.

RB Leipzig’s rocky start can be attributed to their tactical reset with Julian Nagelsmann moving on to Bayern Munich.

Andre Silva apparently left his shooting boots behind at Frankfurt since he has scored just once in seven games this term, while midfielder Dani Olmo appears to be a step behind as of the moment.

Marsch has been criticised for not getting the best out of his squad so far, but it’s hard to blame him since the team he’s inherited is significantly weaker compared to what Nagelsmann had last season.
