Borussia Monchengladbach vs RB Leipzig
Seven days is a long time in football and if I had been writing this preview, Bundesliga: Monchengladbach vs Red Bull, a week ago things were looking rather different.
Red Bull Leipzig will arrive at the Borussia Park Stadium on Saturday top of the Bundesliga table after a narrow victory away to Hertha Berlin last weekend, but they have since taken a hammering in the Champions League. Meanwhile, before their meeting with Mainz last week, Monchengladbach were languishing in mid-table but a 3-2 win has lifted Marco Rose’s side up to sixth place, and they followed that up with an impressive performance against Real Madrid.
The Monchengladbach vs Red Bull Leipzig betting odds marginally favour the visitors, but with vastly different experiences in midweek the momentum may just have shifted towards Die Fohlen.
Talking Points
Borussia looking to build on recent successes
A midweek date with Los Blancos was a stern test for Rose’s team but die Fohlen were 2-0 ahead with half an hour remaining in the Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday, before succumbing to a late fight back as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
France striker Marcus Thuram scored twice and he’ll be full of confidence when he faces Red Bull on Saturday. As will midfield ace Jonas Hofmann who was man-of-the-match in Borussia’s 3-2 victory over Mainz last weekend. At 2-1 down with 15 minutes left on the clock die Fohlen were in trouble against the bottom club, until Hofmann stepped up to the rescue.
First he slotted home a penalty won by Thuram and then, with time running out, he swung in a perfect cross for Matthias Ginter to head home the winner, and that made it four assists for the league season from Hofmann.
Alongside Thuram, club captain Lars Stindl will be hoping Hofmann’s service continues to flow on Saturday.
What went wrong for Leipzig in Manchester?
While Monchengladbach were disappointed not to have beaten the La Liga champions, Leipzig took a right royal thumping in Salford last night as Manchester United stormed to a 5-0 win over Julian Nagelsmann’s men, who simply collapsed in the dying minutes.
The Red Bull defence was completely overrun by the Red Devils who scored four goals in the final 20 minutes including a Marcus Rashford hat-trick. The Leipzig head coach was bewildered by the capitulation which unfolded before his eyes, as well as by Manchester United’s opening goal. “It was a bit crazy because after the scored the first goal, we did well,” he said, “the final 20 minutes were very bad.”
The hosts’ opening goal looked offside but Nagelsmann was more concerned by his team’s rearguard: “We can defend it better, that’s the more important topic for me as the manager. You can follow the deep run and then normally it’s no trouble.”
The boss will be looking for France centre back Dayot Upamecano to command his defence, while the strike-force must continue to thrive without the departed Timo Werner. Marcel Sabitzer bagged a late penalty as Red Bull beat ten-man Hertha Berlin last week and midfielder Dani Olmo has made three assists, while Nagelsmann is likely to start with Yussuf Poulsen and Emil Forsberg up front.
History
The head to head Monchengladbach vs Red Bull Leipzig results have been one sided since the two teams first encountered each other in 2016. Monchengladbach are yet to beat Leipzig since Red Bull’s arrival in the top flight, losing five and drawing three of the eight meetings.
The last encounter was a 2-2 draw in Leipzig in February, when Christopher Nkunku scored an 89th minute equaliser after Die Fohlen had raced into a 2-0 half time lead. Jonas Hofmann was on target for Monchengladbach and he’ll be the man to watch again on Saturday.
Before their defeat in Manchester, Leipzig were unbeaten in 11 away games, so what price die Fohlen inflicting a second defeat on the run?
Betting Tip
Borussia Monchengladbach vs RB Leipzig | Borussia Monchengladbach Asian Handicap 0.00 @ 2.17 | |
November 01, 01:30 (GMT+8) |
Well, the hosts are at odds of 2.86, here at SBOTOP, to continue their good run and Red Bull’s bad week, while the visitors are at 2.23 to get back on track; and the draw is at 3.30.
I’m backing the hosts to come away with a least a point, and if Red Bull defend as they did on Wednesday, then maybe three.
Four of the last six games involving these two teams have yielded over four goals so 4-6 goals at odds of 2.66 could be a decent alternative bet.
