Eintracht Frankfurt vs Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund are the leaders in the Bundesliga, but with just a six-point lead over second-placed Bayern Munich, it’s too early for them to relax.
The Bavarians, unbeaten in their last eight league matches, continue to mount the pressure on Lucien Favre’s BVB. Dortmund are also on a roll and look unstoppable with a three-game winning streak, but playing away from home doesn’t seem to be their strongest suit.
Eintracht Frankfurt are currently the fifth-best team in the German top flight, and while they have been struggling in recent weeks, they still shouldn’t be underestimated on their turf.
Talking Points
BVB firing on all cylinders … but not flawless
After suffering their first defeat of the season away at Fortuna Dusseldorf, BVB have since bounced back and won three consecutive games.
Remarkably, two of those wins were against teams in the top five. They took down Borussia Monchengladbach in what was a battle of the top-two seeds back then. After that, they edged out a spirited Leipzig side to stay atop the table.
Dortmund last played bottom-feeder Hannover 96, and they proved their depth in that game by demolishing the visitors with a 5-1 scoreline.
Youngsters Achraf Hakimi and Jadon Sancho impressed with incredible passing and playmaking, while Marco Reus displayed his leadership qualities with a goal and an assist.
Indeed, when everything is clicking, Dortmund are deadly on both ends of the pitch. They are still the best-scoring club with 50 goals and second when it comes to defence, having conceded just 19—behind Gladbach and Leipzig.
The problem for BVB, however, is their tendency to lose focus on the defensive end. They win games, sure, but they are developing a bad habit of allowing unnecessary goals.
Dortmund have only three clean sheets in their last 10 games, and that could be their downfall if they continue to play like that. After all, it already backfired to them in their loss to Fortuna a month and half ago.
Eagles struggling but remain dangerous
Dortmund’s defensive problem won’t be much of an issue if they are up against a weak offensive squad. Unfortunately, the Frankfurt side is no weak attacking team.
The Eagles have the third-most goals so far, tied with Gladbach with 39. Interestingly, 22 of those goals were scored at home—highlighted by their 7-1 drubbing of Fortuna earlier in the season.
The Bundesliga 2019 results haven’t been kind to the Eagles, with their latest match against 11th-ranked Werder Bremen ending in a 2-2 stalemate. They have won only two times in their last seven, losing three and drawing the other two.
It’s yet to be seen, though, if striker Luka Jovic will remain with the team after the January transfer deadline. The Serbian scorer, who has already hit 18 goals for the Eagles in all gs, and that’s something they wouldn’t be happy about.
competitions, is a hot commodity right now and is reportedly the target of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
If Jovic leaves, his absence will undoubtedly be a massive blow to a Frankfurt outfit whose only other double-digit scorer is Sebastien Haller with 14.
History
Frankfurt have not won against Dortmund in their last five meetings
Dortmund have won back-to-back Bundesliga matches against Frankfurt, with their first encounter this season ending 3-1 in favour of BVB.
Abdou Diallo, Marius Wolf and Paco Alcacer were all on target in that game, while Frankfurt had Haller as their lone goal-scorer.
Before that, Dortmund bagged a 3-2 victory, though their three goals came via an own goal and a double from the now-departed Michy Batshuayi.
If there’s any silver lining for Frankfurt, it’s the fact that they have not lost a league game at home against Dortmund since 2014. In the four Bundesliga matches they had at Commerzbank-Arena during that span, the home team won three times and drew the other one.

The Bundesliga 2019 odds at SBOBET naturally favour the league-leaders, though Asian Handicap Betting suggests it could be a tight affair.
I also think BVB have the advantage. They are the better team and have more depth compared to their opponents.
While that’s the case, I’m not completely ruling out for Frankfurt to find the back of the net against the Yellow Wall and make life a little harder for their visitors.
I think this match will go down the wire, though I’m predicting Dortmund to come out on top late in the game—as they have been doing for the most part of the 2018-19 campaign.
