Bundesliga: Dortmund Finding Comfort at Home

countdown banner

Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen

Borussia Dortmund will be eager to bounce back as they host Werder Bremen at the Signal Iduna Park on the sixth match day of the Bundesliga.

Last year’s runner-ups are coming off a dismal performance against Eintracht Frankfurt where they ended in a 2-2 draw. Right now, they are third at the table trailing behind the likes of Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig with 10 points.

Now back at home, BVB will have the perfect opportunity to record a big win against the struggling Werder Bremen team.

Speaking of Werder, they will face another top-three club this time on the road after facing RB Leipzig the last time around, and they are expected to bring their A-game against Dortmund to avoid sliding down further in the standings.

Could this be a start of a new winning streak for Dortmund? Or will Werder find a way to take advantage of the home team’s complacency as of late?

SBOBET is here to provide you some tidbits ahead on Sunday.

Talking Points

Dortmund warding off complacency

BVB’s recent form kind of reminds us a similar pattern last season as they tend to start off strong, take the lead, and then drop a game or two due to their inability to close out well. Lucien Favre’s team has shown the same alarming pattern particularly against Eintracht Frankfurt.

After consecutive dominating performances versus Augsburg, Koln, and Bayer Leverkusen recently, Dortmund was on the wrong side of the Bundesliga 2019 highlights when they went toe-to-toe against the Eagles.

In each time BVB scored a goal, Eintracht Frankfurt would find an answer to match their output. It even looked like that Die Adler was the one hungry for the Bundesliga title!

As always, Dortmund are still dangerous on the attack especially with the trio of Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus, and Paco Alcacer. The trio have accounted for 11 out of their 15 total goals so far this season.

It’s their defence, however, that needs some improving if they’ll win it all this season. The team can’t over-rely on Mats Hummels to keep everyone in check on the backline for Lucien Favre. Their youngsters in Manuel Akanji, Achraf Hakimi and Raphael Guerreiro will have to be better on not getting out of place, especially when their opponents employ an aggressive press.

Claudio Pizarro’s swan song

Werder Bremen were so close to getting a Europa League berth last term. They finished at the eighth spot at the table, trailing only by one point behind Eintracht Frankfurt. But even when they fell short, it was encouraging sign nonetheless for team manager Florian Kohfeldt – who was signed to a long-term pact that would last up until 2023.

Moreover, this might be the last year of Claudio Pizarro after a 20-year career in the Bundesliga. The Peruvian skipper has amassed 474 total appearances and 197 goals playing for Bayern Munich, FC Koln, and Werder Bremen.

In his prime, Pizarro was one of the strongest attackers in Germany. His potency in the box drew the attention of Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid, but he eventually ended up with Bayern Munich to spend six seasons there.

Pizarro was brought back by Werder Bremen — even at 40 years old — to be a veteran presence in the dressing room for the likes of Josh Sargent and Milot Rashica.

Speaking of Josh Sargent, he is a player to watch out for the Green-Whites for this season. The American youngster started by scoring in his first touch against Fortuna Dusseldorf and he doubled his tally in their succeeding match against RB Leipzig last campaign.

With Max Kruse leaving and Claudio Pizarro getting old, Sargent may be the ideal choice to lead their attack in the long-run.

History

Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen have a closer head-to-head matchup than most would think. In 110 total encounters, the home team holds a 47-45 edge along with 18 draws.

The Lucien Favre-mentored side has done really well at home by winning nine of their last 10 Bundesliga games there. Also, they have scored more than two goals in their last 19 Bundesliga home matches.

Betting Tip

??
Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen Borussia Dortmund Asian Handicap -1.50 @1.72
September 29, 00:30 (GMT+8)

For this match, Borussia Dortmund are at 1.27 while Werder Bremen are pegged 10.00 in 1×2 market. Chances of a draw are quite unlikely at 5.60, as per Bundesliga 2019 odds.

It will be a daunting task for Werder Bremen to get a good result against BVB at the Signal Iduna Park. Even if they play flawlessly on this one, the trio of Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus, and Paco Alcacer will be too much for them.

As for the home team, they just need to avoid complacency moving forward. They should be able to create multiple chances against a makeshift Werder Bremen defence.
