countdown banner

FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund

Trying to sustain their exquisite form as of late, Borussia Dortmund are set to continue their journey in the Bundesliga by going up against FC Koln in the second Match Day.

The game will be held in the RheinEnergieStadion where fans over there are ecstatic to see the host team FC Koln make their top-flight comeback in the Bundesliga after winning the second division title last season.

After an impressive 5-1 victory against Augsburg, the Lucien Favre-managed club will look to win two in a row as they try to stay atop of the table.

Today, SBOBET gives you a preview on what’s ahead for this upcoming match in Match Day Two.

Talking Points

Borussia Dortmund’s auspicious start

It’s no secret that Borussia Dortmund have a ton of regret after losing the title to the hands of Bayern Munich last season. The nail in the coffin was when they were crushed by the Bavarians with a 5-0 score last April. The title was theirs to lose after leading for the most part, too bad that they couldn’t sustain it in the end.

BVB performed beyond expectations during the pre-season. They won in all six of their exhibition games and have scored at a high rate in all of them.

Bundesliga: Paco Alcacer seems to form a deadly combination wirh Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus during pre-season
Borussia Dortmund’s Paco Alcacer celebrates scoring against FC Augsburg

In those six games, Paco Alcacer led the charge for Dortmund with six goals. He, along with Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus, will form a deadly combination that will increase their Bundesliga 2019 odds of winning the championship.

New signings Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard will add on to their vaunted attack while Mats Hummels continues to man the centre-back position for the team.

As shown in their first game of the season, offence won’t be a problem for Lucien Favre’s side. However, their defence needs to hold up especially once they’ll get to face the top dogs as the season rolls on. And perhaps that will be the determining factor on whether they’ll win it all this time or not.

How will FC Koln fare this season?

One year after their relegation to Bundesliga’s second division, the Billy Goats have returned to top-flight status – and they plan on staying there for good.

Such predicament came to the surprise of their loyal fans in Cologne since they have been doing okay in the past few seasons. However, their successive losses until Match Day 17 proved to be too much to handle in their last campaign.

A big part of their misfortune is failing to keep the enigmatic Anthony Modeste at the time. The French striker left Germany for China in what was a soap opera-like turn of events. Then-manager Peter Stoger has had a contentious relationship with him after the move, and they haven’t been the same ever since.

With his transfer, FC Koln struggled mightily on their attack. But more importantly, the rigours of playing in several leagues took its toll given their lack of depth. Even the late signing of Simon Terodde couldn’t rescue the team from being relegated.

Fast forward to this season, FC Koln made sure to reload their roster by bringing in a 31-man pool mixed with young studs and experienced vets, as per Bundesliga 2019 news. Along with Simon Terodde — they managed to bring in the likes of Timo Horn, Kingsley Ehzibue, Birger Verstraete, and even Anthony Modeste — after his deal with China ran out its course.

Given their recent transactions, I won’t be surprised if the Billy Goats can score a few upsets here and there against some of the giants this season.

History

Borussia Dortmund and FC Koln have played against each other in 25 matches where the former has won in 14 matches while the latter have won only four times. There have been seven drawn matches between these two clubs.

Neither team won in their encounters from May 2016 up to April 2017.

The Billy Goats’ previous win against BVB was a 2-1 triumph back in December 19, 2015.

Betting Tip

??
FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund Borussia Dortmund Asian Handicap -1.00 @1.69
August 24, 02:30 (GMT+8)

It’s no doubt that last year’s second-placers are the heavy favourites in this matchup. BVB is pegged at 1.46 on winning this game, while Koln is at 5.80. The Bundesliga 2019 odds for a draw are at 4.70.

Even with the advantage at home, FC Koln will definitely have a hard time in matching up with BVB’s firepower on offence.

The trio of Jadon Sancho, Paco Alcacer, and team captain Marco Reus would be too much to handle for the home team, so it’s safe to place your bets on a high-scoring victory for the fellows clad in yellow and black.

I see a 3-0 win for Borussia Dortmund in this game.
