Borussia Dortmund vs VfL Wolfsburg
The Bundesliga has an exciting set of matches in store to kick off the 2021 calendar year.
Other than the matches between VfB Stuttgart-RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt-Bayer Leverkusen, this one perhaps is the most thrilling one yet.
On Sunday night, Borussia Dortmund will host VfL Wolfsburg over at the Signal Iduna Park, as both teams will jockey for position in the Bundesliga standings.
The hosts are hopeful that they can win this one since they have some catching up to do in order to get back into the ever-tightening championship race.
BVB are currently at fifth place with only 22 points, while Die Wolfe are one place above them with 24 points.
The SBOTOP betting odds point to an auspicious result for Borussia Dortmund given their history over VfL Wolfsburg.
But given how Oliver Glasner’s men are playing lately, it would be harder for the Yellow Wall to silence the howl of Die Wolfe this time around.
Before we get into the match proper, first, let’s discuss the important Bundesliga 2021 updates concerning these two clubs.
Talking Points
Erling Haaland is expected to return for Borussia Dortmund
The Norwegian striker is expected to make his return for the Yellow Wall, and that is good news if you’re team manager Edin Terzic.
BVB missed Erling Haaland dearly as he missed their last seven league games due to a torn hamstring. He was seen in Qatar undergoing rehab during the break and it has worked into perfection since he was seen back in training recently.
With him on board, Edin Terzic will have a bevy of options in their attacking front.
He can opt to plug in Erling Haaland right away as their main striker which might put Youssoufa Moukoko back on the bench.
However, the 16-year-old striker recently made history as the youngest Bundesliga scorer ever, and that performance should warrant at least a consideration to be in the starting XI once more.
Besides getting Haaland back at 100-per cent, Terzic is hopeful that his other teammates will get a clean bill of health.
Veteran centre-back Mats Hummels and winger Thorgan Hazard will be out due to their respective knocks, while Thomas Meunier, Emre Can, Axel Witsel, and skipper Marco Reus are all working their way back into full fitness.
Can VfL Wolfsburg break their drought against BVB?
VfL Wolfsburg have yet to win over Borussia Dortmund in quite a while, but their growing injury list makes it difficult for them to pull off such feat.
Maximillian Arnold, Maxence Lacroix, Kevin Mbabu, Jerome Rousillon are all question marks for Oliver Glasner, while Admir Mehmedi and Pavao Pervan are sidelined for this match.
The returns of Maxi Philipp, Xavier Schlager, and John Brooks should help a bit. But the key man to look out for will be Wout Weghorst.
The Dutchman leads Die Wolfe with nine goals and one assist so far, and he has yet to score against Borussia Dortmund in his VfL Wolfsburg career.
If Weghorst can break his personal drought against BVB, that would give Die Wolfe a better chance of winning.
History
The Yellow Wall have been utterly dominant against VfL Wolfsburg and they are keen on maintaining the trend come Sunday.
BVB have been unbeaten in 10 straight matches against Die Wolfe, winning nine and drawing once.
But recent form favours Oliver Glasner’s men prior to this fixture as they have only lost once in their first 13 matches for the first time in club history.
Wout Weghorst has been the driving force for VfL Wolfsburg’s run. But so far, playing BVB has been his Kryptonite.
Another player that is hungry for goals will be Jadon Sancho as the winger has yet to score in the Bundesliga this term.
Betting Tip
Borussia Dortmund vs VfL Wolfsburg | Borussia Dortmund Asian Handicap -1.00 @ 1.99 | |
January 3, 22:30 (GMT+8) |
The updated Bundesliga 2021 odds have the home side winning via a considerable margin.
Borussia Dortmund are heavily favoured to win at 1.57, while VfL Wolfsburg are priced at 5.40 and a draw is at 4.10 in the 1X2 market.
Goals can come in plenty for this one given that both teams have some of the best attackers in the league, so you can go for Over 2.50 @ 2.13 or a safer alternative will be Total Goals 2-3 @ 1.93.
The Signal Iduna Park is the place to be for some topnotch football action this weekend. And coming off from their respective holiday breaks, BVB and Die Wolfe will give us quite a show.
With a healthier and stronger squad, I see Borussia Dortmund taking care of business at home. However, it will be hard-earned victory that will be settled in the late stages of the match.
