Bayern Munich vs. VfL Wolfsburg
They are on the march again, and don’t the Bundesliga leaders know it. After a slow start to the season, FC Bayern are on a winning streak and hunting the pace-setters.
As Borussia Dortmund is painfully aware having been chased down by Die Bayern last term, wrestling the league title off the Bavarians can be impossible when they are in the mood.
A midweek win in Freiburg lifted Hansi Flick’s Bayern up to the third in the table, above Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 and four points behind joint leaders RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach.
The other top sides will be hoping that Bundesliga: Bayern vs Wolfsburg can throw up a shock result.
Oliver Glasner brings his Wolfsburg side to the Allianz Arena in eighth place, and on the back of two impressive home results against top-five sides. This Bayern team hasn’t performed to its usual standards so far this season, but is beginning to show some resilience and ruthlessness, breaking the hearts of a capacity 24,000 crowd in Freiburg last night with two injury-time goals.
After Robert Lewandowski had put the champions ahead, Vincenzo Grifo levelled for the hosts before Joshua Zirkzee and Serge Gnabry struck in the 92nd and 96th minutes.
It was a huge three points to win which keeps the top spot within touching distance, and it seems there’s no stopping Lewandowski who has already scored 19 goals in the first 16 league games.
Is there any more lethal striker in Europe? He scored 30 in 2015 and 2016 and looks set to beat that landmark this time.
Wolfsburg’s Man Mountain
Glasner sets his side up in a 4-1-4-1 formation which is spearheaded by the impressive Wout Weghorst. The Dutch striker is top-scoring for the Die Wolfe with seven goals this season, but there’s a lot more to his game.
He has won 62 aerial duels and covered 184 kilometres, ranking fifth in the league in both those measures. Add to that his 503 sprints (second in the league) and the 6’6” athlete is a handful for any defence.
Wolfsburg were on a mini-slump recently before the visit of Borussia Monchengladbach when they came out with a 2-1 victory, and Die Wolfe followed that up with a 1-1 draw at the Volkswagen Arena against FC Schalke thanks to a late Kevin Mbabu goal.
Both these teams are prone to rattling the woodwork, FC Bayern has done more than any other club, having hit post or crossbar 12 times, and only FC Schalke 04 have been denied by the woodwork more than Wolfsburg’s seven times. Wolves midfielder Joao Victor has hit the post three times.
History
After two 16th place finishes, Die Wolfe reached the heady heights of sixth last season to qualify automatically for the Europa League.
And they have been a force in the German league in the not too distant past, winning the title in 2009 while equalling the longest winning streak with ten consecutive victories after the winter break.
Die Wolfe also finished runners up to FC Bayern as recently as 2015.
With seven consecutive Bundesliga titles in their locker, Bayern have now won 10 of the last 13 games in all competitions and things are beginning to look ominous.
The head-to-head Bayern vs Wolfsburg results aren’t a good omen for the Wolves either. In the last 51 meetings, Bayern have won 40 and drawn six, with Wolfsburg managing just five victories.
In March, Bayern won this fixture 6-0 as Lewandowski helping himself to a brace, and it was a result which took Die Bayern to the top of the table having chased down long-time leaders Borussia Dortmund.
And Die Wolfe have failed to win any of their last 25 encounters away to Bayern.
