It may seem impossible. But if there’s a club that can do it, it is certainly Bayern Munich.
It’s no secret that the Bavarians are aiming for their 10th straight Bundesliga title and they’ll pull out all the stops to get it, although it may seem unfair for the rest of the competition.
Juventus were the other big club who accumulated nine straight titles in Serie A, but their La Decima dreams have come to a screeching halt as Inter Milan were not to be denied.
I Bianconeri had their share of mistakes from within plus some bad luck, and Bayern Munich can certainly learn from them to avoid the same fate.
Unlike Juventus, however, Bayern Munich come into the upcoming season as the huge favourites as per the Bundesliga 2021 odds.
So today at SBOTOP, let’s examine Bayern Munich’s blueprint to success on trying to secure their 10th consecutive domestic title.
Bayern Munich’s championship core remains intact
Winning is always a mix of luck, great players, coaches, and management – and Bayern Munich have managed to have all of those year in and year out.
In the early 2010’s, Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Philipp Lahm make up their championship core, and they had strong understudies in the form of David Alaba, Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez, and Robert Lewandowski.
When Robben, Ribery, Schweinsteiger, Lahm all moved on, the turnover to the young ones has been smooth and the same formula has carried them to this day.
Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller acted as the bridge to those two generations. Neuer can still play at the highest level at 35 year old, while Muller remains as one of their top creative sources.
Robert Lewandowski continues to evolve after coming on from Borussia Dortmund in 2014. The Polish striker had a Ballon d’Or-calibre season in 2020 and he’s ready to create new Bundesliga 2021 highlights in the upcoming season.
Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Niklas Sule, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, Alphonso Davies, Lucas Hernandez, Kinglsey Coman, and Jamal Musiala will definitely contribute too. All of them are battle-tested and they’re not afraid when the lights are on in the big stage.
The newcomers can come in and help right away
Before even securing their ninth successive title, Bayern Munich have already made moves ahead of the 2021/22 season.
When Hansi Flick confirmed that he has no plans to return at the coaching helm, the Bavarians were fortunate to have found a suitable replacement.
Julian Nagelsmann was appointed by Die Bayern to become their new manager via a five-year deal through 2026.
He seems to have the Midas touch in everywhere he goes. When he took over TSG Hoffenheim at 28 years old, Nagelsmann steered Die Kraichgauer to safety at the end of his first year and he even guided them to two top four finishes in the next three seasons.
Nagelsmann then brought his winning culture to RB Leipzig from 2019 until last season. The Red Bulls were unknowns, but he was able to bring them to as far as the Champions League semis for the first time in 2020.
At the age of 33, Nagelsmann’s coaching future is bright and his tactical nous and strong personality fits well to Die Bayern’s core values.
Along with Nagelsmann, Bayern Munich have also added Dayot Upamecano to their roster via a five-year deal as well.
The French international has been a revelation since joining RB Leipzig from RB Salzburg in 2017. Upamecano has compiled 139 appearances in all competitions and he is one of the main reasons why the Red Bulls overachieved last term.
With David Alaba and Jerome Boateng out of contract, Upamecano should fit in right away as he’s the ideal centre-back for the defending Bundesliga champions.
He is the fastest centre-back in the league with a top speed of 22 mph and time is certainly on his side at just 22 years old.
Bayern Munich are far from done
Aware that they’ll have a huge target on their backs next season, Bayern Munich might continue to retool their roster only when the opportunity presents itself.
Julian Nagelsmann reportedly wants to bring in Dani Olmo, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Federico Chiesa, but they won’t be able to add those names unless they can sell some of their assets.
Kingsley Coman might be on his way out since the Bavarians are hesitant to give him his desired lucrative extension. However, they can get significant value in return if he is sold.
Bouna Sarr, Corentin Tolisso, and Michael Cuisance have yet to prove themselves for the team and all of them are transfer candidates as well.
