Football fans are in for a treat especially when Bundesliga is about to start its 2020 season on August 16.
Despite being the heavy favourites to win it all again next season, Bayern Munich is about to face some serious competition with 18 teams in the mix.
FC Koln, SC Paderborn, and Union Berlin are being promoted from last season, while VfB Stuttgart, Hannover 96, and 1. FC Nurnberg are the latest victims of relegation.
Top-tier clubs like Borussia Dortmund, RB Leizpig, and Bayer Leverkusen are all out there to try and take the much-coveted championship out from the hands of the Bavarians.
SBOBET takes a preview on some of the highly-anticipated matchups in the Bundesliga 2020 season.
The much-awaited Der Klassiker
We were blessed to witness two thrilling matchups between these two teams last season.
In what was a Klassiker for the ages, Dortmund triumphed against Bayern (3-2) in dramatic fashion, putting themselves at the top of the table momentarily. However, the Bavarians fought back at the Allianz Arena and crushed Dortmund (5-0) in the following fixture to retake the lead.
The Bundesliga 2019 news reported the departure of forwards Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery for Bayern. However, the team’s expectations are still high with guys like Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, and Manuel Neuer still in the fold. Expect the Bavarians to not be complacent as they prepare to defend their crown.
BVB, on the other hand, are looking to make up for their runner-up finish last season. Dortmund will continue to have Marco Reus, Paco Alcacer, and Mats Hummels leading the way. However, the development of Dan-Axel Zagadou and Tobias Raschl will be vital if they’ll have any chance of upsetting the defending champs.
More fireworks are expected from these clubs in the upcoming season. They will have two chances on going at each other’s heads at Match Day 11 happening on November 2019, and at Match Day 28 set on early April 2020.
Dortmund seeking redemption in the Revierderby
Another drama-filled matchup awaits between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke in the classic Revierderby. They will face each other at Match Day 9 and at Match Day 26 sometime next year.
Jadon Sancho was the star during their first fixture last season, as he scored the match-winning goal at the Veltins Arena. However, the Royal Blues got their payback by ruining BVB’s title hopes in a come from behind 4-2 win at the Signal Iduna Park.
While the Bundesliga 2019 odds of winning next season’s title appears to be more favorable for Dortmund than of Schalke, these clubs from the Ruhr area are expected to bring out the best of each other whenever they meet up – and that wouldn’t be any different come the Bundesliga 2020 season.
RB Leipzig taking on the top dogs
RB Leipzig had a good showing last season after finishing third overall at the table — only behind Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich — which is why their upcoming clashes against the top two teams are sure to bring excitement for Bundesliga fans.
Some key dates for the Red Bulls are at Match Day 4 on early September in their home pitch versus Bayern Munich and at Match Day 33 versus BVB on May 2020 – with the latter posing some major ramifications.
Youngsters Yussuf Poulsen and Timo Werner will be at the spotlight for RB Leipzig’s attack while Hannes Wolf will provide additional firepower at the midfield – after signing a 12-million Euros deal from sister club Salzburg.
Berlin Derby
In what will be a first in league history, Hertha and Union Berlin are slated to meet for the first time in the 2020 season. It’s a battle of East (Union) and West (Hertha) at Match Day 10 during opening week and at Match Day 27 on March.
Hertha is busy building for the future by bringing in youngsters Daishawn Redan, Ondrej Duda and Marko Grujic. On the other hand, Salomon Kalou will bring veteran leadership and experience for the Pal Dardai-mentored club.
Meanwhile, Union would want to make sure that their recent promotion is no fluke. They’ve made sure of that by contracting former Bundesliga standouts in Neven Subotic, Manuel Schmiedebach, Christian Genter, and Marvin Friedrich.
Subotic, who’s already an established name in German football, chose to suit up for Union and has set lofty expectations for his new squad.
“Survival will perhaps be the toughest job of my career. If we do it, we’ll be absolutely delighted. We’re not thinking about playing in Bundesliga 2 next season,” said the Serbian defender.
Union Berlin will make its Bundesliga debut against RB Leizpig on August 18 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
