“The Premier League is the best league in the world. But Barcelona are the best team,” was what Suarez reportedly said. Now, this could be somewhat upsetting especially for La Liga which prides itself of being a topnotch league in all of Europe.
And La Liga has reason to be grumpy about it. In the last 10 UEFA Champions League final matches, a La Liga club was crowned champion five times – FC Barcelona in 2005-06, 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2014-15. The other one was Real Madrid (2013-14). In that stretch, England managed to win twice (Manchester United and Chelsea FC), and so did Italy (AC Milan and Inter Milan).
In terms of club performances, a Spanish team is on top of the list, with Real Madrid being crowned winners ten times, followed by Milan, Bayern München and FC Barcelona. Liverpool, an English team, is only the fifth team with the most titles in this competition with five.
And even in the UEFA Europa league, the Spanish clubs dominated in the last 10 years. Sevilla FC had four during that stretch, while Atletico Madrid had two. In that span, only Chelsea FC from England managed to emerge victorious.
But this is Luis Suarez speaking anyway. Who will take seriously what a man obsessed with biting fellow helpless football players says? Let us just hope that FC Barcelona do not get ousted in the European competition by an English club, because this will really not look good especially for Luis Suarez.
