4th ODI: Australia vs England
England stride into the 4th ODI at the Adelaide Oval on Friday with one objective in mind even if the series is already in the bag at 3-0.
After a miserable Ashes series, the One Day team have restored pride and the Three Lions are roaring again. With home advantage, the Green Baggies are marginal favourites to win this clash at betting odds of 1.85, while the tourists at 2.03.
But England’s sports betting fans are looking a little further.
As England’s Barmy Army sang, after winning in Sydney, ‘We’re going to win 5-4’ in reference to the 4-0 series defeat in the Test matches, they weren’t alone in wondering why the England selectors hadn’t picked a side with such pace and power for the long game.
England were without Ben Stokes but on the evidence of the first three ODIs, surely some of the one day stars would have faired well. The batsmen have been fearless, Jason Roy hitting a record breaking 180 in Melbourne, and in Sydney, Jos Buttler stroked a brilliant unbeaten century to make it 3-0.
The hosts have their own firecrackers though. Aaron Finch followed up a century in the second ODI in Brisbane with 62 in Sydney, and in the combative David Warner they have the third best batsman in the world. They also brought in the Test pace trio of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc to test the England batsmen.
The Three Lions’ will be without paceman Liam Plunkett through injury but in Mark Wood, captor of Steve Smith’s wicket in Sydney, they have a bowler of real pace…ideal for the fast tracks in Australia.
Can England go on and win this series 5-0? Well the Three Lions are third in the ODI rankings with the Aussies two places behind in fifth, and with the 2019 World Cup in their sights, a whitewash would be one heck of a statement.
