Kevin Love is the biggest what-if of the game. He only made a single shot out of his measly nine attempts throughout 37 minutes of floor time. JR Smith even took more shots than him. If he got his shooting stroke down earlier in the game, we would have been talking about how the Cavs were able to defend The Land.
The facet of their game plan that probably hurt them the most, however, was their over-reliance on a three-point game that wasn’t working. They took 11 more three-point attempts than the Dubs but managed to sink four less. Their live-and-die-by-the-three philosophy was especially evident in the fourth quarter, where they kept on chucking careless three-pointers despite the close scores.
The Cavaliers have to pull off a feat even more impressive than last year’s if they want to win the NBA Championship. They need to force the issue inside and stop depending on long-range bombs. They need their stars to attract the defence in order to make their shooters’ lives easier. If they aren’t able to do that, we’ll see a lot of Golden State fans bring out their brooms to jeer them.
