Premier League: Spurs Have Bigger Problems Than a Top 4 Finish

Tottenham have been one of the most disappointing clubs in the Premier League this season, considering where they were last term (fifth place), as they’re nearer to the relegation zone than inside the Top 4.

Before they recently secured a 2-0 win against Brentford last weekend, the Spurs were winless in their previous seven games in the Premier League. Because of their horrific run of Premier League 2025 results, Ange Postecoglou’s side are 14th in the English top-flight table with 27 points, level with 15th-seeded West Ham United.

To make matters worse, Tottenham are also eliminated in the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, so they’re facing the prospect of going trophyless for another year, prolonging the agony of their faithful fans.

So, what has gone wrong with Postecoglou’s second full season in North London? Continue reading below, as SBOTOP deep-dives into the Spurs 2024-25 campaign thus far.

Injuries are not doing the Spurs any favours

Injuries played a key role in the Spurs’ downfall this season. It got so bad for them that, at one point, Tottenham were missing 11 senior players in their 2-1 loss against Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round last Sunday. Tottenham didn’t do much in the recently concluded winter transfer window to address this, as they only acquired Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso to mitigate their losses.

Some of the notable absentees include Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Radu Dragusin, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert, Richarlison, Timo Werner, and Brennan Johnson.

Antonin Kinsky has started in Vicario’s place but might not be ready to take over the starting goalkeeper role. Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel are still finding their feet in North London, and youngsters Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, and Mikey Moore are playing more minutes than they should out of necessity.

It also doesn’t help the Spurs that Heung-Min Son looks far from his usual self. The South Korean captain has been bothered by niggling injuries this season (because of his domestic and national team duties), which has affected his performances. Son only has six league goals and seven assists this term.

Every club in Europe is dealing with injuries, and that’s normal. However, one can argue that no one has it worse this season than the Spurs.

Pressure on Postecoglou has intensified

Ange Postecoglou is under enormous pressure and scrutiny, as the losses and draws keep piling up. As a result, there’s growing uncertainty about his future in North London, with reports suggesting that the front office has begun internal discussions about his potential replacement.

Fulham’s Marco Silva has been floated as a candidate to take the Tottenham job if Postecoglou gets the sack. The Portuguese boss has been widely praised for his impressive work at Craven Cottage, where he has guided his team to ninth in the standings this season, and they are in contention for a European football berth despite their huge personnel losses last summer. Silva was also a candidate for the previously open West Ham United job before the Hammers eventually appointed Graham Potter. Erik ten Hag, Julen Lopetegui, Eden Terzic, Max Allegri, and Xavi were also linked with the Spurs head coaching job.

Hearing your name in sack talks is unfair if you’re Postecoglou, but unfortunately, that is what he signed up for. The Premier League (and football in general) is a results business, so time is ticking. A little bit of injury luck could save his job, though.

Can Tottenham save their season?

As things stand, it looks dire for the Spurs, but there’s still one way to salvage their 2024-25 campaign. If Ange Postecoglou somehow wins the Europa League, not only will he warrant a contract extension, but he will also be known as the one who ended the team’s long trophy drought.

Even with their domestic struggles, Tottenham managed a Top 4 finish in the league phase of the revamped Europa League, and they’re undefeated in their last four European matches (W2, D2). Because of this, they will sit back and wait to learn about their Round of 16 opponents.

The Premier League 2025 odds predict the Spurs finishing outside the Top 10. Winning the Europa League is the only way they can return to Champions League football next term.

The proper approach for Postecoglou is to take it one match at a time and shut out the outside noise. The law of averages will eventually even things out for Tottenham since they’re too talented (collectively) to be outside of the top half.
