Serie A: Lazio Look to Capitalise on Fiorentina’s Slide

Lazio vs Fiorentina

After recently taking the fourth seed in the 2024-25 Serie A table, Lazio will aim to solidify their Top 4 credentials by picking up more points in their next few matches. I Biancocelesti have 39 points and are undefeated in their last three games across all competitions. Following last night’s 3-1 win against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, their confidence is high heading into this Sunday’s game against Fiorentina at Stadio Olimpico.

Fiorentina are slowly slipping outside the European places after hitting a purple patch late last year. La Viola have fallen to sixth in the standings with 33 points, level with seventh-seeded Bologna, after going winless in their previous five games (D2, L3).

Despite the huge difference in their recent forms, the pregame SBOTOP betting odds expect a close encounter between Lazio and Fiorentina. Which team will come out on top this weekend?

Talking Points

Key returns for Lazio

Head coach Marco Baroni will continue to rotate his squad, as Lazio will play their second game this week. He didn’t have a full squad against Real Sociedad, but some of his key players will be recalled into the rotation this Sunday.

Samuel Gigot and Luca Pellegrini will return after serving their suspensions in the La Real match. Gigot’s probable return to the starting XI would relegate Alessio Romagnoli to the bench, and Pellegrini gives Baroni another off-the-bench option. First-choice goalkeeper Ivan Provedel should also return as a starter after he took a rare day off yesterday to give way for Christos Mandas. Elseid Hysaj, Toma Basic, Gaetano Castrovilli, and Arjon Ibrahimovic were ineligible to compete against Real Sociedad, but they’re not against Fiorentina. Manuel Lazzari, Patric, and Matias Vecino remain the notable absentees for Lazio.

Mario Gila, Mattia Zaccagni, and Taty Castellanos scored Lazio’s goals against Real Sociedad, and they should continue to start. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Tijjani Noslin, and Pedro also made good cameos. Baroni will have options against Fiorentina.

Palladino could be fighting for his Fiorentina job

Raffaele Palladino's job at Fiorentina is under threat due to poor Serie A results
Fiorentina manager Raffaele Palladino gestures from the technical area during the Serie A clash against Juventus

Local reports indicate that Raffaele Palladino’s job was in jeopardy following Fiorentina’s poor run of results. It was rumoured that director Daniele Prade, with whom Palladino is not on best terms, could call on Igor Tudor to take over the coaching helm if the team continues to drop points.

Despite dealing with immense scrutiny, Palladino remains optimistic that La Viola will bounce back sooner rather than later. For this to happen, everybody needs to step up.

Moise Kean is Fiorentina’s brightest spot this season. The former Juventus striker is La Viola’s leading scorer with 12 league goals and two assists. However, he needs help. Lucas Beltran, Albert Gudmundsson, and Danilo Cataldi are the joint second-leading scorers with only three goals each. Yacine Adli and Lucas Beltran have four assists apiece to lead the team in playmaking.

Fiorentina recently acquired Michael Folorunsho from Napoli, and they’re hoping he could be the difference-maker. However, the 26-year-old has yet to score a goal this season.

History

Lazio and Fiorentina have already faced off earlier this season. Fiorentina won 2-1 at the Artemio Franchi Stadium last September, as Albert Gudmundsson came off the bench and converted two penalties to overturn a one-goal deficit created by Mario Gila.

La Viola have won back-to-back league matches against I Biancocelesti and are attempting to make it three victories in a row. If they win this weekend, Fiorentina will record a home and away win against Lazio in the same season for the first time since 2012-13.

However, Lazio are undefeated in their last eight Serie A games at Stadio Olimpico (W6, D2), although their last two such games were 1-1 draws against Atalanta and Como.

Betting Tip

As mentioned, the Serie A 2025 odds have them close between I Biancocelesti and La Viola. Lazio have a slight advantage at 2.04 because they’re playing at home. Fiorentina aren’t far behind at 3.36 odds, and a draw is at 3.19 in the 1X2 market.

Fiorentina may have gotten the better of Lazio before, but the hosts should bounce back in the reverse fixture. Marco Baroni’s men are eager to put on another show in front of their fans, and they will do it by giving them new Serie A 2025 highlights. Besides our recommended bet, bettors can also go for alternatives like Over 2.25 at 1.74, Over 2.50 at 2.01, Over 2.75 at 2.33, and Total Goal 2-3 at 1.97. Meanwhile, a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of La Viola – the result of their previous meeting – has a generous offer of 12.50 your bet.
