Australian Open: Djokovic Reminds Us Why He’s The King of Melbourne

Novak Djokovic is on his way to reclaim his crown in Melbourne, as he’s already through to the 2025 Australian Open semi-finals. The Serbian international is fresh from beating Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round, and the updated Australian Open 2025 odds fancy Djokovic’s chances to win his 11th title.

The 37-year-old will, of course, need to fend off stiff competition to win the first Grand Slam of this season. Djokovic will likely face players above him in the ATP rankings, namely Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner, the defending champion. Speaking of Sinner and Zverev, the former will take on Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals later, while the latter has also made it to the final four after a thrilling quarter-finals victory last Tuesday.

If you have missed the intensifying tennis action in Melbourne Park, worry not, as SBOTOP has you covered with the latest Australian Open 2025 updates.

Djokovic shakes off injury to stun Alcaraz

Novak Djokovic secured a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 quarter-finals victory over Carlos Alcaraz in one of the tournament’s best matches considering the circumstances. The Serbian international received a medical timeout at 4-5 in the first set and returned with his upper left leg taped, and he was determined not to let the knock get the better of him despite dropping the opening set.

Djokovic raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Alcaraz made it 3-3 as he regained the break of serve. This didn’t deter Djokovic, as he upped his aggression to minimise the length of rallies and level the match at one set apiece.

He further pressured Alcaraz in the third set by striking 11 winners and only committing four unforced errors while breaking the Spaniard twice. During set point, Djokovic let out a primal scream after winning a huge rally that gave him enough momentum to pull away in the fourth and final set.

Novak Djokovic became the first and only player in the Open Era to secure his 50th Grand Slam semi-finals, including his 12th in the Australian Open. His victory against world no. 3 Carlos Alcaraz was his first against a Top 10 player at a Grand Slam since 2023 when he beat Daniil Medvedev in the US Open. The Serbian is also the third man in the Open Era to reach the Australian Open semi-finals aged 37 or older alongside Roger Federer and Ken Rosewall.

Zverev hits new milestone

Alexander Zverev secured a spot in his third Australian Open semi-final by defeating Tommy Paul

Up next for Novak Djokovic is Alexander Zverev, who reached the Australian Open semi-finals for the third time in his career after defeating Tommy Paul 7-6(1), 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-1.

With the first set at 5-5, Zverev and Paul exchanged breaks, with the former saving set point at 6-5, 40/30 on Paul’s serve, and then racing through the tie-break. Paul recorded an early break in the second set but had three straight errors as he was broken at love for 5-4. Zverev then saved another set point at 4-5, 40/30 and won 11 consecutive points to take the set following a love hold at 5-6 with a 7/0 tie-break victory. Alexander Zverev dropped the third set but bounced back in the fourth and final set by almost sweeping Tommy Paul aside.

With his 30th win in the Australian Open, Zverev passed Boris Becker to claim sole ownership of the all-time singles record for most wins by a German man at the Grand Slam. For Zverev, he is hoping he’ll win his first Grand Slam here in Melbourne. As for Tommy Paul, he is guaranteed a Top 10 spot in the ATP rankings after doing well in the Australian Open.

Sinner’s fitness is in question

Jannik Sinner is coming off a remarkable 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Holger Rune in the fourth round, but health concerns loom large ahead of his quarter-finals clash against Alex de Minaur.

The world no. 1 skipped practice before the match against Rune because he didn’t feel well. Sinner even called for a medical timeout during the middle of the third set, as he looked physically drained in Melbourne’s hot weather.

However, Sinner began to move better after the medical timeout. And when his thunderous serve in his first service game of the fourth set broke a metal ring at the bottom of the net, it led to a 21-minute delay, which gave him more time to recharge his batteries.

Sinner hopes he’ll return to 100-per cent fitness soon because de Minaur will be ready to pounce if the top seed will be off his game.
