Premier League: Here Come Amorim’s Red Devils

Manchester United are still far from where they want to be, but they’re making baby steps under head coach Ruben Amorim. Following their 2-0 loss against Newcastle United before the end of 2024, Manchester United have yet to lose a game this year. 

They notched a 2-2 draw against Liverpool and defeated Arsenal in the FA Cup third round (penalty shootout) and Southampton 3-1 last night. Next up for Manchester United is a tricky match against Brighton at Old Trafford, and winning this game will help them return to the top half of the English top-flight standings soon.

Brighton are the ninth seed with 31 points. Fabian Hurzeler’s men recently ended their eight-game winless run with a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town yesterday.

Amad is a Manchester United superstar

Amad Diallo is becoming a fan favourite for Manchester United supporters, and he showed us why after his otherworldly outing against Southampton. The Red Devils trailed by one goal for almost the whole evening after Manuel Ugarte’s own goal before halftime, and things looked dire for Ruben Amorim’s side in the last 10 minutes.

The Ivorian winger came to Manchester United’s rescue by recording a hat-trick in front of the Stretford End. Amad Diallo took everyone on in his first goal. His second goal was a dink past Aaron Ramsdale after a nifty feed from Christian Eriksen, and his third was off a horrendous defencive mistake by the Saints.

At 22 years and 189 days, Amad Diallo became Manchester United’s second youngest Premier League hat-trick scorer. Only Wayne Rooney did it at a younger age (21 years, four days vs Bolton Wanderers). 

Amad Diallo, who scored the lone goal against Brighton last August, has adapted well as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim, starting in 12 matches since Erik ten Hag was fired. It’s no wonder the Manchester United officials tied him down to a new contract extension until 2030.

Besides Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee also deserves plaudits against Southampton, as he changed the game when he was subbed in. Don’t be surprised if he gets the starting nod over Rasmus Hojlund.

 

Rutter could give Brighton a jolt

Georginio Rutter is a key player for Brighton, as he’s picking up form in the past few games. The 22-year-old forward has scored three goals in his last two games across all competitions. Rutter started the week by leading Brighton to a 4-0 win over Norwich City in the FA Cup third round last Saturday, as the Frenchman scored two goals in eight minutes. He also scored the Seagulls’ second goal against the Tractor Boys yesterday.

Brighton hope Rutter will keep his scoring streak alive against Manchester United, but they won’t mind if the others score too. Besides Rutter, the Red Devils must watch out for Danny Welbeck, as the veteran striker now has five league goals against his former club.

Brighton have beaten Manchester United 2-1 in the reverse fixture last August, with Erik ten Hag still at the coaching helm for the Red Devils. Danny Welbeck and Joao Pedro scored for the Seagulls, and Amad Diallo scored for the Red Devils.

Manchester United have lost five of their last six Premier League games against Brighton (W1). Overall, Brighton have won seven of their 15 Premier League games with Manchester United. None of their English top-flight encounters have been drawn, with the Red Devils winning the other eight games.

The Red Devils have not scored against the Seagulls in the first half of their last 11 Premier League meetings, their joint-longest run without a first-half goal against any side in the competition (also eight vs Chelsea between 2013 and 2016).

Brighton have given Manchester United problems in the past few years, but they are, by no means, invulnerable. Ruben Amorim’s men will ride the momentum they’ve built in their recent games to get the victory.
