Premier League: Brentford are Out to End Their Newcastle Drought

Two teams that are next to each other in the Premier League standings will go head-to-head, as Brentford host Newcastle United at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday. The Bees are in ninth place with 20 points while the Magpies are right behind them, and a +1 goal difference is the only thing that separates these two proud sides.

Brentford are coming off a 3-1 loss against Aston Villa, ending their three-game undefeated streak, and Newcastle United are winless in their last three games after a 2-0 loss against West Ham United and successive stalemates against Crystal Palace and Liverpool.

Depending on this week’s Premier League 2024 results, Brentford or Newcastle United could see themselves as high as sixth place, especially if Tottenham falter against Bournemouth later.

Brentford are fun to watch at home

Brentford fans are in for a treat because they’ll get to see their beloved team entertain them again at home. The Bees recently became the first team to score at least 20 goals at home during their 4-1 rout against Leicester City last weekend, doing so in their opening seven matches, the earliest in English top-flight since 1982-83.

Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo are firing on all cylinders since the dynamic duo has 16 league goals combined. Kevin Schade became the team’s third-leading scorer with three after scoring a hat-trick against the Foxes. Mikkel Damsgaard has been sneakily good this season with two goals and a team-high five assists.

But while the Bees’ attack is doing fine, their backline needs to improve since they’ve conceded four goals in their last two outings. Injuries haven’t helped them, as Mathias Jensen (hamstring), Kristoffer Ajer (foot), Josh Dasilva (knee), Rico Henry (knee), and Aaron Hickey (thigh) have all been out. Given the quick turnaround between matches, we don’t expect one of them to return in the matchday squad this weekend.

Yehor Yarmoliuk got a rare start against Aston Villa, and he might stay in the starting XI to accompany Vitaly Janelt and Mikkel Damsgaard in the middle of the park. Keane Lewis-Potter, Ethan Pinnock, Nathan Collins, and Sepp van de Berg should remain the four people in front of goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

 

Guimaraes hits significant milestone with Newcastle United

Bruno Guimaraes made his 100^th Premier League appearance during Newcastle United’s 3-3 draw against Liverpool, and he put in one of his best performances of the season. The Brazilian midfielder had a hand in the Magpies’ two goals, with two assists to Alexander Isak and Fabian Schar. Anthony Gordon also found the back of the net in the 62^nd minute to put the Magpies up 2-1 before Mohamed Salah’s first goal.

Newcastle United hope that Guimaraes will continue to kick on, especially with their absentee list slightly easing up. As of this writing, Sven Botman (knee), Jamaal Lascelles (knee), and Emil Krafth (shoulder) are their only notable injured players ahead of the Brentford contest.

Brentford have lost nine of their last 10 league matches against Newcastle (D1). The Magpies became the first team since Swansea in 2019 to have beaten the Bees five straight times. Thomas Frank’s men lost 4-2 against Eddie Howe’s side in May, as Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak, and Bruno Guimaraes found the back of the net for Newcastle United while Vitaly Janelt and Yoane Wissa scored for Brentford.

The last time the Bees claimed a point against the Magpies was a 3-3 result in November 2021. Jamaal Lascelles found the back of the net for Newcastle United and Brentford. Ivan Toney, Rico Henry, and Joelinton were also on the scoresheet, while Allan Saint-Maximin scored the equaliser for the Magpies in the 75^th minute.
