Bundesliga: Dortmund Hunts Die Wolfe

VfL Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund

The race is back on at the top of the Bundesliga, and this Saturday second-placed Borussia Dortmund heads to Wolfsburg to continue an attack on the leaders.

BVB are chasing down Bayern Munich, who are in search of an eighth successive Bundesliga, and started with a victory over Union Berlin. But Lucien Favre’s side, which flirted with title glory last season, made a highly impressive restart to this campaign and he’ll hope for more of the same in Wolfsburg.

Die Wolfe are in sixth place and have aspirations to return to Europe, having competed in the Europa League this term, finishing second in Group A to make the Round of 16.

This will be another tough test for Dortmund but one they will relish.

Talking Points

BVB quickly back in the groove

Dortmund’s attacking options give their fans hope that they can definitely win the title this year, having come agonisingly close last season. There’s a fascinating title chase in store for Sbobet Bundesliga fans, and with BVB preparing to host Bayern Munich next week, this could be a pivotal few days.

Only the league leaders have scored more than Dortmund’s 72 goals, three more in total, and Die Schwarzgelben have hit 13 in the last five games. Last week, at a deserted Signal Iduna Park, they made a stunning restart in the Revier Derby, thumping Schalke 04 by 4-0 with Raphael Guerreiro scoring a brace as the BVB strike force ran riot.

Erling Haaland has made the Bundesliga 2020 news headlines ever since his 17m Euro switch from Salzburg in January and his early strike, latching on to a superb ball from Thorgan Hazard before finishing coolly, was his tenth goal in nine league starts. His transfer fee looks like an absolute steal right now as Dortmund have picked up 24 points from the nine games since his arrival. Hazard was also on the mark, bagging his sixth goal of the season as well as making his 11th assist. With Jadon Sancho sidelined last week, and Marco Reus and Axel Witsel both out injured, Favre’s front men have shown he has strength in depth.

Wolfsburg’s Europa charge

Die Wolfe finished sixth in the 2018/19 Bundesliga and head coach Oliver Glasner has guided them to the same position this term, at the head of a group of four teams chasing the second guaranteed Europa League place.

Wolfsburg started with a handy 1-2 win away to Augsburg but it was a little less convincing than BVB’s return, Daniel Ginczek climbing off the bench to hit a dramatic injury-time winner. That win gave Die Wolfe a two-point cushion ahead of seventh-placed SC Freiburg, and they will hope to snatch a point against BVB to keep their momentum.

Top scorer Wout Weghorst was out of the side last week, and if he doesn’t make the starting line-up on Saturday Glasner will be happy to rely on Renato Steffens, who scored in Augsburg with a deft header. The win kept Wolfsburg’s seven-match unbeaten run going so they will return home with some confidence.

Max Arnold is a key man, having made five assists this season, but his fellow midfielder Ignacio Camacho is injured, as is defender William.

History

BVB have won 27 of the 47 matches played between these two teams since 1997, with Wolfsburg winning ten and drawing ten

Dortmund have been dominant in the recent meetings, unbeaten in nine against their hosts and having won five of the last six games, drawing the other one. Three of those victories came by a 3-0 scoreline, the last a comfortable home win at the Signal Iduna Park. After a goalless first half, BVB ended Wolfsburg’s unbeaten run as Hazard scored his first goal for the club.

While Dortmund’s defence hasn’t always been as impressive as its attack, they have kept clean sheets in each of the last six meetings with Wolfsburg.

And the hosts have been hit and miss on home soil, winning four, drawing six and losing three in Wolfsburg.

Betting Tip

??
VfL Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund Borussia Dortmund First Half 1X2 @ 2.39
May 23, 21:30 (GMT+8)

The latest Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund betting odds have Favre’s team well in front at odds of 1.72, with Wolfsburg at 4.26 and the draw at 3.59.

Die Wolfe are on a decent run, but Dortmund’s restart last week was so much more convincing and in Haaland, they have a striker who can bully defence and win a game on his own, though he is surrounded by players with attacking flair.

I just think they will have too much for their hosts and will be in front by the break.

And if you fancy a repeat of that regular score-line in this fixture, then you can get odds of 15.40 on a 0-3 result.
