The Bundesliga title race has taken another significant turn this weekend as Borussia Dortmund jumped back up to second place in the table after a 2-1 victory away to Borussia Monchengladbach.
The BVB were aided by the fact that RB Leipzig slipped up for the second week in a row after they were held to a goalless draw away to Wolfsburg.
Dortmund are now just a point behind leaders Bayern Munich, who will be in action against Augsburg on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen further improved their Bundesliga 2020 odds to finish in the top four following a dominant victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Dortmund edge out Gladbach in Battle of the Borussias
Borussia Dortmund are once again looking like Bayern Munich’s biggest title challengers. The BVB moved to second in the table as they passed a tricky away test at Borussia Monchengladbach, 2-1.
The visitors got off to a flying start as Thorgan Hazard gave them the lead after just eight minutes. The Belgian unleashed a brilliant left-footed strike to score against his former team.
Lars Stindl got the hosts back on level terms five minutes after the break. The Gladbach captain ghosted his way in front of the Dortmund goal and redirected an Alassane Plea shot into the net.
Hazard very nearly got his second goal just after the hour mark, but he was denied by a brilliant save by Yan Sommer.
However, Dortmund would get their winning goal on 71 minutes. Achraf Hakimi got in behind the Gladbach defence and slotted the ball between Sommer’s legs.
For the first time in his Dortmund career, Erling Braut Haaland has failed to score in back-to-back games. Although, he played just 27 minutes against Freiburg. He was also credited with an assist for Hazard’s opener, his first in 10 games for Dortmund.
Dortmund will need their young star striker to rediscover his scoring touch in midweek as they take on Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League round-of-16 second leg.
Leipzig held to goalless draw by Wolfsburg
Dortmund were able to go back up to second after RB Leipzig could only draw away to Wolfsburg. Leipzig have drawn in back-to-back weeks as they were also held by Bayer Leverkusen.
The Red Bulls’ Bundesliga 2020 results have not been impressive at all; they’ve now drawn four of their seven games since the winter break, with two wins and one defeat.
With their huge Champions League second leg against Tottenham coming up, Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann opted not to start star striker Timo Werner.
Leipzig struggled to produce that cutting edge in front of goal without their leading scorer. Werner came on for the final half hour, but Leipzig were still unable to break Wolfsburg down.
Despite controlling 61 per cent of possession, Leipzig were still outshot by Wolfsburg, 16-14, and the two teams were even at 4-4 in terms of shots on target. Werner was unable to get a shot away in his 30 minutes of action.
With that draw, Wolfsburg are now unbeaten in their last eight matches in all competitions and are up to eighth in the table.
As for Leipzig, their next assignment will be at home against Tottenham in their Champions League round-of-16 second leg.
Luckily for Leipzig, Spurs have been in disastrous form of late, which is why SBOBET odds have the Germans — who have a 1-0 aggregate lead — as favourites to move on to the quarter-finals.
Leverkusen fire four past Eintracht Frankfurt
Bayer Leverkusen continued their impressive run of late with a 4-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Kai Havertz and Karim Bellarabi struck early, while teenager Paulinho bagged a brace in the second half to seal the points.
Outside of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen have been the form team in the Bundesliga over the last few weeks. Leverkusen have won 10 of their 12 matches in all competitions in 2020 (one draw, one loss) and are unbeaten in their last nine.
They are also through to the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal and are in the round of 16 of the Europa League. They will travel to Glasgow to face Rangers in the first leg of their tie in midweek.
Eintracht Frankfurt could potentially face Leverkusen in the semis of the cup. However, the Eagles have struggled of late. After thrashing Augsburg 5-0, they’ve lost their last three league games in a row, two by 4-0 scorelines and the other at home to newly promoted Union Berlin.
