Borussia Dortmund vs VfL Wolfsburg
Borussia Dortmund vs Wolfsburg will be a battle between two of the top five in the Bundesliga table. However, both sides won’t be in the best of form heading into this big match.
Dortmund have been quite inconsistent over the past few weeks and have struggled to string together good results. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg have gone weeks without a win and are coming off a demoralising league cup defeat.
Dortmund are still second-favourites to win the title according to the Bundesliga 2019 odds. But they need to start picking up wins against sides like Wolfsburg, especially at home, if they are to truly contend this season.
Talking Points
Dortmund look to deliver at home
Borussia Dortmund have yet to find any sort of consistency this season. After a string of three consecutive draws to end September, their October results in all competitions have been as follows: win-draw-win-loss-draw-win. Their lone loss during that stretch was away to Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Their recent Bundesliga 2019 results have been especially uninspiring. They’ve drawn four of their last five matches, including two where they conceded late equalisers due to own goals. Their performance in their 0-0 Revierderby draw against Schalke was also disappointing as they were outshot, 14-8.
Although, they have scored two wins in two weeks over surprising Bundesliga leaders Borussia Monchengladbach — one in the league and one in the DFB Pokal. Julian Brandt’s late brace led Dortmund to a 2-1 cup win.
Both matches against Gladbach were at home, where Dortmund have remained formidable this season. They’re undefeated in six home games in all competitions this season (four wins, two draws) and have won 13 of their last 16 Bundesliga matches at home.
The good news for Dortmund is that Paco Alcacer is back in training and even made the substitutes bench against Gladbach. The Spanish striker hasn’t featured in a month due to injury.
Prior to his layoff, Alcacer had a stretch of scoring in 11 of his last 12 appearances for club and country and already has seven goals for Dortmund this season.
It remains to be seen if Alcacer will be fit enough to start against Wolfsburg, but he might be able to come on as a substitute if needed.
Wolfsburg’s worrying form
Wolfsburg surprisingly find themselves up in fourth place, a point ahead of Dortmund through nine games. The Wolves are the only undefeated team left in the Bundesliga with four wins and five draws. They also boast by far the best defensive record with just five goals conceded.
However, that defence was blown out of the water by RB Leipzig, who stuffed the Wolves 6-1 in their recent DFB Pokal matchup.
That cup clobbering was the latest in Wolfsburg’s recent run of poor results. They’ve now gone four matches without a win in all competitions. While they drew 1-1 away to Leipzig earlier in the month, they also drew 0-0 at home to Augsburg, who are second from bottom and have conceded 21 goals in nine matches.
Wolfsburg have once again been highly reliant on Wout Weghorst in attack. The Dutch striker, who had a brilliant debut season in the Bundesliga last year as he had 17 goals and seven assists, has already scored five goals this season, tied for third in the league; the rest of the team has just six in total.
With Dortmund’s ability to score goals, particularly at home, Wolfsburg will need Weghorst to be at his best for the Wolves to get a positive result out of their visit to Signal Iduna Park.
History
Dortmund have dominated their matchup against Wolfsburg in recent years. They’re undefeated in their last eight meetings against them and have won seven of those matches. More worryingly for Wolfsburg, they’ve failed to even score a single goal against Dortmund in their last five matches.
Dortmund did the double over Wolfsburg last season, although the Wolves very nearly stole a point at Signal Iduna Park. They kept Dortmund out for nearly the entire match until Paco Alcacer came up with two goals in the 90th and 94th minutes to give Dortmund the 2-0 win.
Betting Tip
Borussia Dortmund vs VfL Wolfsburg | Borussia Dortmund Asian Handicap -1.00 @ 1.85 | |
November 2, 22:30 (GMT+8) |
Despite their recent slump, SBOBET odds are still big believers in Dortmund, who are priced at 1.51 to get the home win. Wolfsburg are a mere 5.80 with the draw at 4.30. Betting on the draw isn’t a bad shout given the current form of these two clubs.
But I have my sights on the -1.00 Asian Handicap and am taking Dortmund to win. I think their advantage at home will be just too great and Wolfsburg will be unable to produce the offence necessary to pick up a positive result.
